Just ask the Dallas Cowboys.
But Auburn boys basketball coach Al Giannone feels good about his squad's upcoming Section III playoff game against Baldwinsville. The Maroons have already handed the Bees a 65-54 and a 60-47 loss this season, and currently, are playing their best basketball of the season.
“We're playing as good as anyone,” Giannone said. “We're playing good defense and rebounding the ball. We're peaking at the right time.”
Fourth-seeded Auburn (16-4 overall, 9-2 in league) will host 13th-seeded Baldwinsville (6-14, 2-10) in the Class AA playoff Tuesday at 7 p.m. The winner plays the West Genesee-Liverpool winner on Friday.
The CNYCL American champions are coming off a win over Fayetteville-Manlius in which Auburn's two big men had monster performances. Center Jimmy Pitts poured in 24 points, 22 rebounds and six blocks while Damien Whitaker finished with 17 points and 10 rebounds.
The duo is combining to average 31.0 points and 20.2 rebounds per game.
“I think Auburn's been underrated all year,” Henninger head coach Erik Saroney said in an interview with Time Warner Sports. “Pitts is good but Whitaker is the guy who scares me.”
In Class B-1, No. 3 Skaneateles (12-7, 6-6) hosts South Jefferson (9-10) in a first-round matchup Friday. The Lakers have won eight of their last 11 games.
Also in B-1, Jordan-Elbridge (2-18) earned the ninth seed and will travel to play Holland Patent (4-16) Tuesday.
In Class C-1, Cato-Meridian (9-9, 6-9) earned the seventh seed and hosts 10th-ranked Little Falls (7-13) Tuesday. In the top of the bracket, No. 9 Port Byron (9-11, 6-9) travels to face Westmoreland (9-11) in another Tuesday first-round matchup.
