Iraq war increasing suffering, refugee crisis

Saturday, February 9, 2008 11:06 PM EST

War causes untold suffering beyond the casualties that dominate the headlines. One of the terrible human consequences of the Iraq war is the mounting refugee crisis.
The UN estimates that nearly 5 million Iraqis have been displaced by the continuing violence in their country. Over 2.4 million have vacated their homes for safer areas within Iraq. About 1.5 million are living in Syria. More than 1 million have fled to Jordan, Iran, Egypt, Lebanon, Turkey, and Gulf States.

Iraqi refugees have no legal work options in most host countries and are increasingly desperate. They have difficulty finding housing, obtaining food, and accessing health care.

Neighboring countries are overwhelmed by this massive refugee influx and have increased restrictions on refugees. These restrictions are at least partly because of the lack of adequate support from the United States and other donor governments to lessen the tremendous burden that the host countries are bearing.

Since the United States created this humanitarian crisis by launching a pre-emptive war on Iraq, we surely have a grave moral responsibility to do more to alleviate the suffering of Iraqi refugees.

Write your representatives in Washington to urge greater U.S. aid and an end to the war that continues to exacerbate this problem. You can send a letter to President Bush through www.refugeesinternational.org.

" My mistake -- that post is under the Letter-to-the-Editor regarding McCain specifically. I think I must have viewed too many pages one after another too fast and I got lost.... "

" Why was Karl's response to this article deleted? I thought he said it all about how McCain is still trying to relive Vietnam today. "

" Aid, no. Let the Iraq government produce more oil and sell it on the market to gain funds to support their people. As for a lot of the refugees you talk about they are coming from the Gaza Strip moving into Egypt. This has nothing to do with the war or the U.S. It has to do with Hamas taking control of Gaza and telling the countries they use to get aid from (U.S. being one) that they will continue their fight to destroy Israel and then the U.S. Give aid to these people, not in this life time. As for the war, it will continue even if a Democrat is elected into office and they pull out of Iraq. The terrorist will come back stronger once our troops are no longer hunting them and they will come here to kill Americans. They will not care if you are a civilian, you must die. When will the Democratic president realize the war has not ended? I don't know but, I for one don't want to find out either. You do realize we have been in Germany and Japan for 62 years now, after WWII ended. Would you say that the U.S. staying in Germany and Japan was a success? I would. "
