Dogs react to subtle signals

Have you ever noticed all the subtle signals that your dog picks up on and responds to? Just a few of the things my dogs react to are: my closing a book, taking off my glasses, shutting down the computer, putting on my shoes, picking up my keys and getting ready in front of the mirror. All these activities and more put my dogs on high alert hoping for a change of scene.
€ Did you miss PETA's banned Super Bowl ads? They were banned from TV because they were considered too shocking, sexy or provocative?

You can see them at www.petatv.com/banned.asp-20K.

€ How about the New York Times story, “Rethinking the Meat-Guzzler?” The article compares two commodities that share a great deal: oil and meat. It is accompanied by a photo of a feed lot in California containing some 100,000 heads of cattle for beef.

The article makes the point that like oil, meat is subsidized by the federal government. “Assembly line meat factories consume enormous amounts of energy, pollute water supplies, generate significant greenhouse gases and require ever-increasing amounts of corn, soy, and other grains.”

€ New York state is considering a bill that will prohibit the tethering of a dog for more than six hours in a 24-hour period and requires that the tether be 15 feet long.

Please write to your state senators and members of the state assembly urging them to support Senate Bill 2052 and Assembly Bill 6553 and to vote in favor of this critically important legislation. It will affect the lives of thousands of dogs in New York state that are currently tied out and left there to live out their lonely lives without even the minimum of things that responsible owners provide for their pets.

€ The League of Humane Voters (LOHV) was formed to make animal protection a mainstream political issue by building support among citizens, activists and political parties. LOHV will endorse candidates and then campaign for those who will work to enact animal rights legislation. The organization believes that animal exploitation is a political issue and not just a moral one. To find a chapter of LOHV near you, go to their Web site and click on “chapters.” The site, www.humanevoters.org, has a section where one can see a listing of and links to pending state bills. Also see “alerts” for a proposed Seneca Depot Canned Hunt and be sure to look at petitions to sign.

€ A new and wonderful hour-long TV program, “Dogtown,” aired on the National Geographic channel three weeks in January and is slated to air again in March on Friday nights right after “The Dog Whisperer.” The program is filmed at Best Friends Sanctuary in Utah and portrays the extraordinary work they do there. “Dogtown” is the area on the 33,000-acre sanctuary that is devoted to the rescued dogs.

Take a look at the Best Friends Web site: www.bestfriends.org. Currently there are updates and portraits of the dogs that were rescued from Michael Vick's dog fighting kennel.
