Members of the Weedsport volleyball team celebrate after their 3-0 victory over Frankfort-Schuyler in the Section III, Class C-2 quarterfinals on Friday night.
For the second-straight season, the Warriors hosted Frankfort-Schuyler in the Section III, Class C-2 quarterfinals. But unlike last year, the Warriors didn't win in five nail-biting sets.
They did it in three.
No. 4 Weedsport kept the first two sets close and got a big edge in the third, before letting fifth-seeded Frankfort-Schuyler back into it at the end, but they ultimately came away with the 25-21, 25-18, 25-22 win.
The Warriors jumped out to a 7-0 lead in the third set and looked as though they were going to cruise to another spot in the sectional semifinals, but the Maroon Knights crept back in. When the home team needed just six points to earn the win, the Maroon Knights scored six straight instead.
“I was kind of freaking out at the end,” Warriors co-captain Heidi Robinson said. “We just had to get everything together, we had just won two games!”
But just as it was Robinson who had served seven straight times to help take the early lead, it was the senior again who was at the helm when the team needed one last point to move on. With five aces under her belt already, Robinson needed another to seal the win, but after Frankfort-Schuyler was able to return it, it was instead a Robinson kill that sent Weedsport to the next round.
“I'm kind of used to it at this point,” Robinson said. “It seems like every game, I'm at the pressure point.”
She finished the game with six kills, six assists and four digs on top of the five aces, which led the team.
“Heidi has been one of the backbones of the team this year, by far,” Warriors coach Sandy Donahue said. “But one thing I like about this team is that we've never had just one standout every single game. Last year, we relied on a couple of people most of the time, but this year, it's been one or two players always stepping up, doing something right. But Heidi goes without saying - she's an all-around player, she's been very consistent.”
The Warriors, for the second year in a row, will move on to play the No. 1 team in the semifinals.
This year, they will travel to play undefeated Dolgeville (20-0) on Tuesday. If Weedsport continues its scrappy play, the chance for an upset is pretty big.
“I have faith in these guys, they never seem to give up,” Donahue said. “They just keep going. I called a timeout in the second game and they told me, 'Coach, it's just seven points, we'll get it back'. I believe that they're going to do it, even though they give me a bit of heartache from time to time.”
Though the first set was close, with no more than a four-point differential either way at any time, and Weedsport held the lead for most of it - the second game was played much differently.
The Maroon Knights played well at the start, getting a quick 3-0 lead. They made it 11-5 soon after, but Weedsport was able to climb back. A variety of Warriors contributed to the comeback, mixed in with some Frankfort-Schuyler errors. Three Maroon Knight volleys into the net helped the Warriors soon tie the score at 15 and on the next play, the Warriors took the lead for good as they scored four straight points to conclude the set.
Co-captain Chelsea Paquette also played well, with four aces, five kills and a block. Murphy Enos racked up a team-high seven digs on top of two aces, two kills and two assists, while Rebecca Relfe led the team with eight kills, in addition to an ace, four assists and two digs.
“Becca had a great game tonight, she played extremely well in the front row,” Donahue said. “And I can't say enough about Murphy. Stats-wise, she doesn't stand out a lot, but when it comes to her passes, they've been phenomenal all year. She's been incredible in the back.”
Senior Anna Wilson led the team with 12 assists, along with three digs, three kills and an ace. Nicole Huttar contributed two aces, four kills and a block.
The OHSL Patriot National champs are confident, and rightfully so, about their chances heading into Tuesday's big game.
“I'm really proud of them - this whole season has been unbelievable,” Donahue said. “Throw in the league title and it's all really sweet. Any given day though, I'm a firm believer in never giving up.”
