HIT: To the above-average local turnout for the presidential primary in New York on Tuesday. In Cayuga County, more than 6,000 Democrats and 4,000 Republicans went to the polls to vote.
Across the state, high turnout seems to indicate a great deal of interest in this year's presidential race. Voters want a reason to believe their votes count, and having such competitive races for both parties helped spur interest.
It will be interesting to see what the November turnout will be when the prize is the White House itself.
MISS: To the possible loss of New York State Troopers as school resource officers in some rural districts. In the proposed state budget, Gov. Eliot Spitzer proposes the elimination of that type of officers in 119 school districts.
While the troopers would be used for other crime-fighting purposes, it would be sad to think what could happen without these officers in their assigned schools.
HIT: To the Shrove Tuesday dinners held around the area this week. What a way to get ready for Lent: excellent food, great fellowship and sacred tradition.
Don't forget the volunteers who helped put on these Shrove dinners. From cooking to cleaning, preparing to serving, without volunteers, Shrove dinners wouldn't exist.
Now we can hardly wait for all those fish dinners on Fridays for the next six weeks.
HIT: To another undefeated regular season by the Auburn High School boys swimming team. The Maroons finished 9-0 for the second straight year after a 90-83 victory over the Fayetteville-Manlius Hornets on Tuesday.
Last season, the Maroons won the Section III championship and had a good finish at the New York State Public High School Athletic Association championships.
Auburn can now shoot to repeat those accomplishments as well.
