Adirondack's rustic charm brought home

The Adirondack Mountains, with their exquisite scenery, rustic campgrounds and hospitable resort towns, are likely a favorite vacation spot for central New Yorkers.
And soon, Skaneateles residents will be able to have a part of the Adirondacks' unaffected charm right in their own living rooms.

In the coming weeks, Robert and Carolyn Coville, of Skaneateles, plan to open Wildwoods Adirondack Home Decor, a furniture and gift shop that will be located at 22 Jordan St. in the former Frog Alley Toys location.

The store will sell high-end “rustic” merchandise reminiscent of a mountain getaway, Carolyn said from her Skaneateles home.

“Our family has been going to the Adirondacks for every vacation for at least 30 years. We just love the whole atmosphere,” she said. “We're hoping to bring a little bit of the Adirondacks to Skaneateles. Opening this shop is something we've been wanting to do for several years now.”

The couple, along with their son, Curt, who will manage the shop, are novices in the retail industry, Carolyn said.

“This will be kind of new for us,” she continued. “But we've been (to the Adirondacks) enough that we've hopefully developed a taste for that style.”

Wildwoods will offer furniture items like hand-carved coffee tables with glass tops.

“That table is great. When you look down into it, it looks like there's fish in a flowing stream, even though it's made completely of wood,” Carolyn explained.

A majority of the store's merchandise will be items manufactured in the United States, particularly in Montana.

“We're also going to sell gourmet coffee called Snowy Mountain, which happens to be made in Montana, too,” she added.

Asked to summarize her new shop in one word, Carolyn thought for a moment.

“Relaxing,” she finally answered. “We've loved the feeling of relaxation we get in the mountains, so that's what we want our shop to be.”

Though a firm date has yet to be decided, Coville said that Wildwoods hopes to open its doors by March 1 and will likely be open 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. seven days a week.
