There are many events being offered by our churches over the next few weeks to help each of us to grow in our faith during this Lenten season.
€ Westminster Presbyterian Church, at 17 William St., is offering a five-week “Soup and Study” series with the theme “Reflections on the Lord's Prayer,” focusing on the prayer that Jesus taught his followers to pray, and that Christians have been praying for more than 2,000 years. This will be held every Wednesday evening from Feb. 13 through March 12, beginning with soup at 6 p.m. followed by study from 6:30 to 7:30 p.m. Everyone is welcome.

€ The First Presbyterian Church, at 112 South St., is hosting a Lenten “Soup and Study” with the theme, “Jesus, when did we see you?” And Jesus replied, “just as you did it to one of the least of these who are members of my family, you did it to me.” (Matthew 25:40)

This event will be held from 6 to 7 p.m. Wednesday evenings. Soup and a beverage will be provided. Please bring your own sandwich and a canned good for the food pantry. They will be exploring the needs of people right here where we live, and some of the ways that those needs are being met by faith communities and local agencies.

This sounds like a wonderful event to help us grow in our faith in a very practical and tangible way right here in our own community, while serving the needs of the less fortunate among us. They have many exciting guests planned to lead the discussion each week:

€ Feb. 13 - Nancy Sheffield, pantry coordinator from Calvary Food Pantry. “I was hungry and you gave me food.”

€ Feb. 20 - A representative from First Love Ministries Soup Kitchen. “I was thirsty and you gave me something to drink.”

€ Feb. 27 - Laurie Trojnor from Catholic Charities and the Chapel House Homeless Shelter. “I was a stranger and you welcomed me.”

€ March 5 - Susan Marteney, director of the Cayuga County Chapter of the American Red Cross. “I was naked and you gave me clothing.”

€ March 12 - Wendy Young, resident director of Matthew House. “I was sick and you took care of me.”

€ March 19 - Deacon John Tomandl, chaplain at Auburn Correctional Facility. “I was in prison and you visited me.”

Please consider reserving Wednesday evenings during Lent for either of these worthwhile “Soup and Study” learning experiences. If Wednesdays are not good for you, there are many other options.

€ Holy Family Church on North Street will be hosting Bible study in the school building at 7 p.m. on the following Monday evenings: Feb. 11, 18, 25, March 3, and 10.

€ St. Alphonsus Church on East Genesee Street will be hosting a “Breaking Open of the Sunday Readings” at 6:45 p.m. in the rectory on the following Tuesday evenings: Feb. 12, 19, 26, March 4 and 11.

If daytime hours are better for you, the following events for Lent are also starting this week.

€ St. Mary's Church on Clark Street is hosting Lenten Ecumenical Lunches in Schrader Hall (behind the church) from noon to 12:45 p.m. on Tuesdays during Lent, Feb. 12, 19, 26, March 4 and 11. This will include reading, reflection, discussion and prayer.

€ Sacred Heart Parish on Melrose Road is offering the following educational opportunities for growing faith during Tuesday morning hours: 9:30 a.m. Feb. 19, “In Whom do you Believe?”; 9 a.m. Feb. 26 - “Labyrinth: Come and Pray the Prayer Path”; 9:30 a.m. March 4, “What is the Love of the Trinity?”; and 9:30 a.m. March 18, “How did God Create the World?”

€ First Saturday devotions will be held at St. Francis Church on Clark Street beginning at 8:30 a.m. Saturday, March 1, with the Rosary and Mass at 9 a.m., followed by Exposition of the Blessed Sacrament, Prayers to the Immaculate Heart of Mary and Benediction of the Blessed Sacrament. Individual confession will also be offered at 8 a.m.

€ First Friday Divine Mercy Devotions will be held at St. Hyacinth's Church on Pulaski Street on Friday, March 7, beginning with Mass at 9 a.m, followed by Exposition of the Blessed Sacrament, prayers to the Sacred Heart of Jesus and adoration of the Blessed Sacrament. The day concludes with Divine Mercy devotions at 3 p.m.

€ St. Hyacinth's is also having a Polish food sale. They are taking orders until Feb. 24 for pigs-in-the-blanket at $15 a dozen and Kapusta at $3 a pound. Orders must be picked up on March 4 between 2 and 7 p.m. To order, call Ginny at 253-3803, Dave at 834-6460 or Mary Ann at 252-3823. Place your Easter orders now.

€ Don't forget that a barbecued pork chop dinner will be served at St. Nicholas Church (on the corner of Cross and Cottage streets) from 11:30 a.m. to 2 p.m. Sunday, Feb. 10. The dinner is $10 for adults and $6 for children 12 and younger. For more information, call Bill at 252-2187.

Have a great week and try to allow yourself some free time for God during this Lenten season. And remember always: He made you and he loves you so much.

“The aim of education is the knowledge, not of facts, but of values.”
