The Weedsport volleyball team wrote history this season when they clinched the Patriot National League title after defeating Pulaski for the second time this year.
“In the beginning of the season we lost a lot of seniors who were key players and we went out there just to play with no expectations,” Warriors coach Sandy Donahue said. “We had to change to a defensive team this season.”
The change proved to be successful as they began to win matches and realized they could possibly clinch the league which has never been done by the Warriors volleyball squad before.
“We have not had any one stand-out, dominating player this year, different players take on the role each game,” Donahue said. “It is always a team effort.”
Chelsea Paquette, Heidi Robinson and Murphy Enos are three of the top players for the Warriors.
Paquette has 135 kills, 54 aces, 15 digs and 22 blocks so far this season.
Enos has earned 78 kills, 48 aces, 21 assists and 78 digs going into the championship.
And Warrior Robinson has tallied 79 kills, 69 aces, 162 assists, 14 blocks and 31 digs in the impressive Warrior season thus far.
These stats go to prove that it is an equal and cooperative labor in order to get to the top.
The team effort has placed the Warriors in familiar territory because they have made it to the semifinals and even the finals before, especially in the past couple years but they have never won the championship.
The Warriors are trying to make history twice this season by doing just that.
Friday the No. 4 Warriors will start their quest as they face fifth-seeded Frankfort-Schuyler in the quarterfinals.
It's the second straight year the two squads have met in the quarterfinals.
The Warriors have faced this team before in last year's sectionals where the Warriors came up victorious but they do not want to take anything for granted.
“It is a tough bracket, we don't take any team lightly,” Donahue said. “I try not to put the pressure on them and tell them to believe in themselves. The girls are really excited though.”
Donahue said that the girls will have to concentrate on their defense, getting their passes and serves up if they want to be successful in the championships. Serves have been a real issue this season for the Warriors, giving up much needed points when they struggle to serve it up.
But no matter how far the Warriors make it in the championships Donahue insists “it has been a fun season with them all playing together as a team, I couldn't be more proud of them.”
Donahue has nine seniors that will leave after the season and she admits she will be “sad to see them go.”
