The defending Section III, Class A boys swim champs have done it again.
With a 90-83 win over Fayetteville-Manlius on the road on Tuesday, Auburn put together it's second consecutive perfect season, finishing the 2007-08 campaign 9-0. Before winning the Section III, Class A championship last season, the Maroons went 13-0. In fact, Auburn hasn't lost a meet since Dec. 16, 2005 against Liverpool.
“Over the past three years, we've won 33 and lost one,” Auburn coach Rich Hamberger said. “That's pretty good.”
Pat O'Donovan, Sean McNamara, Preston Chaffee and Lucas Zelehowsky took the 200 medley relay (1:43.83) over the Hornets in a meet that wasn't as close as the final score.
Adam Zelehowsky won the 200 freestyle (1:57.01), while Lucas Zelehowsky finished first in the 200 individual medley (2:07.94) and 100 butterfly (54.99). In the 50 freestyle, senior co-captain McNamara came in first (22.94). O'Donovan took both the 100 freestyle (49.44) and the 100 backstroke (54.42).
With a perfect season comes the pressure of completing it with another sectional title. The Maroons will send 12 swimmers to the sectional qualifiers at the Nottingham High School pool on Feb. 14. Chaffee, O'Donovan, McNamara, Lucas Zelehowsky, Adam Zelehowsky, John Tehan, Greg Rifanburg, Gary Leader, Justin Sawran, Connor Kilmer, Patrick Stevens and Sean Doyle will get the chance to repeat the team's success.
