The local chapter of the American Red Cross will honor area heroes at its annual awards luncheon next month.
The ninth annual Real Heroes awards will be presented from noon to 1:30 p.m. Tuesday, March 18, at the Holiday Inn in Auburn.
Sponsored by the American Red Cross Cayuga County Chapter and Five Star Bank, the event honors people whose heroic actions impacted the lives and well-being of others in the community.
The heroes were selected from among individuals nominated by members of the community who submitted applications in the fall describing why that person should be considered a hero.
Susan E. Marteney, executive director of the Cayuga County chapter, said eight nominations had been received from which six were chosen to receive the award.
In addition, those given special recognition include one nomination, Dr. Carl Weiss, with others selected internally by board members.
“These are wonderful people who volunteer, but they're not just volunteers,” Marteney said. “They are folk who are silent out there doing wonderful things.”
Real heroes for 2008 are: Gillermito “Gidge” Martinez: Trained in first aid, he was nominated by his Red Cross instructor for responding to an injured pedestrian, a senior woman who fell. Tristan Morgan: This 5-year-old saved his mother's life by calling 911. Deputies David Harkness and Timothy Axton: A trained law enforcement team risked personal injury to save the life of a stranger. Michael Deyneka: An Auburn firefighter led fellow firefighters to safety. Kathy Malenick: A day care provider took action to rescue a child under her care.
Special recognitions are given to: Dr. Weiss and his staff at Finger Lakes Weight-Loss Program, Auburn Memorial Hospital; Sandy and Charlie Mettler, dedicated members of the Chapter Disaster Action Team for responding to 11 emergency calls that impacted 48 people; Bud Unger, on-call chair of the DAT, who answered more than 400 calls last year; Auburn Correctional Facility employees, who reached and exceeded their collection goals during four consecutive blood drives; and 729 donors of the monthly chapter drive for donating 29 percent of the blood collected in Cayuga County during the last fiscal year.
Reservations should be made by March 10 by calling 252-9596.
The cost per person is $15 for the buffet luncheon and ceremony.
