Why can't the school board learn we don't need turf?

Tuesday, February 5, 2008 11:53 AM EST

Two years ago, the taxpayers of the Auburn School District, voted no to artificial turf.
However, last year, the administration snuck in Proposition No. 3: Building Capital Reserve Fund, which was approved by a margin of 279 votes.

They said this proposition was “to finance site work, reconstruction and equipping of school buildings and facilities, and costs incidental thereto.”

But didn't this sound very much like the work they'd have to do to install “artificial turf?” Yep.

And so, when the economy is in the throws of a recession and people are losing their jobs and homes because of the sanctioned ongoing JW Bush & Co. corporate-wide corruption in the financial industry, etc., they're proposing artificial turf - again.

And this is to the tune of about $3.5 million that will be included in another capital project of $14.9 million, which is on the heels of a $13.4 million project we approved two years ago.

And where is this “extra money” going to come from to build up their newly created Capital Reserve fund and/or artificial turf?

Basically, we'll get overtaxed - again - and some of the extra dollars will now (or already were) be rerouted from the fund balance account to their capital reserve - aka “artificial turf and goodies” fund, instead of lowering our taxes.

Again, we find it incredulous that this school board and administration are proposing to shove another artificial turf proposal down the throats of us taxpayers again.

What part of no don't they understand?

And did they forget that the AHS football team won the state championship, while playing their whole season on real grass?

We're confident that the district's spin will be “it's only going to cost ‘pennies' per thousand in taxes” plus “it's for the children.” Right.

Enough is enough.

It's your money.

" Bill once again you are not correct. During the football sectional playoffs in 2006 there was alot of rain. This precipitation combined with the old REAL GRASS made for fields that were unplayable. So what does a team do that is preparing for a sectional FB game? They were lucky enough to be able to practice @ Corcoran HS in Syracuse at least 6 times(not free) where they have synthetic turf. You can play on that surface basically regardless of the weather. That last sentence is the one you need to concentrate on. Remember that statement when you drive by AHS this Spring and see all the athletes practicing in the parking lot because no field is dry enough to play on. "

" The school board who you the people elected is trying to do what they think is best for the school system. If you don't like the proposal then vote against it. If you don't vote then shut up and take what you get. Demand that they use only funds from private sources to finance stadium improvements. The board is only doing their job. "

" Hey there tlb4. I do have the facts correct. My point was that they honed their skills during the year on REAL GRASS and with those honed natural grass skills, they went on and won the State Championship on artificial turf. It just proves you don't have to practice and play all year round on artificial turf because 'when you're good, your good' and it doesn't matter what kind of turf you're playing on. You did notice that the last Sunday's Super Bowl was played on REAL GRASS and NOT artificial turf? Must be the NFL knows a 'little' more than our school board and administration.

" I still like the dome idea, what's a few more bucks per year on the taxes. I think Auburn should close State St. to traffic. "

" Just a couple of points. The public with their last vote said no to the turf @ the High School. There was a lot of interest generated by your fellow voters to reconsider placement synthetic turf @ Holland. Would you have any opposition to the project if the taxpayer share was covered by private(business)donations which is seriously being evaluated? Lastly, a small point but let's get the facts correct Bill: The Championship Auburn FB team of 2006 won more games on synthetic turf than they did on natural grass(9 wins and 1 loss). That includes all FIVE PLAYOFF GAMES and the State Championship game.... all played on and won by the Maroons on Synthetic Turf!!!! "

" Everyone wants a 'few more cents' out of us. Whether it is school, county, town, state or federal taxes, they all want more. And what about the electric company, they came and got a few more cents from us already. Milk, bread, cereal, coffee all have gone up a few cents a piece. GAS has gone up and been up more than a few cents....where does this end. Enough. "

" Just another bunch of "Football Dads" wanting to live vicariously through their already-overstressed kids.
Yeah, sure--a dome will keep the graduates at home--what-do you think they'll set up chairs outside of it and sit there lookin' at it? Sheeeesh! "
