The inexperience of the young Maroons wrestling team proved to be detrimental as they lost to Baldwinsville 45-15 on senior night Wednesday.

Senior Shane Woodman, bottom, wrestles Baldwinsville junior Sean Hennigan on Wednesday night.
The match of the night for the Maroons was also possibly the best match of they year as Luke Netti won by an 8-7 decision in the 112-pound weight. Netti was down on his back late in the match with about 30 seconds left when he reversed it and put his opponent on the mats quickly to take the win.

“There was progress tonight,” Maroons coach John Alberici said, “Baldwinsville is one of the best teams in the league and we wrestled exceptionally well against them.”

The seniors honored were Jack Winerth, Shane Woodman, Cody Laxton, PJ Giacona, Max Hazekamp and Dan Rivera.

Woodman (160), who Alberici says has the best work ethic and is the best conditioned athlete on the team, won by a 5-2 decision.

Also winning for the Maroons were Justin Gilmore (152), who tool a tactical match by a 7-5 decision, Giacona (125) dominated his match winning by pin in 2:43.

Winerth (140) wrestled hard but lost an 8-2 decision, Mike Henn (145) showed great improvement but got caught in a cradle and was pinned in 1:24, while Cody Laxton (171), Ian Merritt (189), Pat Day (215), James Murtari (119), Kenny Currier (130) and Neil Halpin (135) all took losses mainly due to their inexperience.

“This is a young team with very little experience, most of our wrestlers are new to the sport,” Alberici said, “Usually it takes three to four years to get comfortable in this sport and most of our guys only have a year of experience.”

The lack of experience put the Maroons at the disadvantage as the Bees carried the match in spite of the effort the Maroons put up.

The JV team had a couple of wins with Eric Disanto (130) winning by a 7-2 decision and Mike Rooker (215) winning by an 11-8 decision.

The Maroons (11-11) will visit Cicero-North Syracuse in their final dual meet of the year on Wednesday.
