In your first year, you have purchased a new boat and opened new substations. Why was that much new spending needed?
Since I took office on Jan. 1, 2007, the Sheriff's Office asked for and received permission from the county Legislature to purchase one new boat for use by our boat patrol. The cost of this boat was $51,500 and the trade-in value for the boat being replaced was $11,500. The state reimbursement for this purchase was 75 percent, or approximately $30,180.00 and the remaining cost of $10,070 was paid for by the sheriff's budget.
During my campaign for sheriff, I traveled throughout our county listening to the citizens and asking what was important to them. Most people asked for better police coverage and protection.
The best way to serve and protect our citizens is to have officers living and working in the area they serve. To me the best way to achieve this goal was to open substations in the north and south areas of our county.
During this past year this was accomplished by opening a substation in Cato and another one in Moravia. This could not have been accomplished without the assistance and cooperation of the mayors, elected officials and citizens. At the present time, there are three uniform road deputies and one uniform road sergeant assigned to both substations.
These deputies live in their respective work areas, which means that the response time to emergency calls and routine calls is much shorter. In the past several years, these same deputies would have had to respond from the Public Safety Building to emergencies in the northern and southern parts of our county.
The better police coverage and much faster response time will certainly benefit all our citizens. The opening of these two substations will also save our county taxpayers approximately $50,000 over the next three years due to our sheriff's vehicle fleet traveling less miles.
In conclusion, whether it's a domestic violence incident, serious motor vehicle accident, house burglary or a house fire, I truly believe due to the quickened response time of the substation deputies, a single life or multiple lives will be saved. I want to thank everyone who believed in, and supported, our two new substations.
