Primary polling stations changed

Many Cayuga County voters will be casting their ballots in Tuesday's presidential primary at different polling locations than usual.
The county board of elections was forced to consolidate its locations because of a change in the ballot format. The largest shift will be in the city of Auburn, where 21 polling locations were converted to six.

The county's dated voting machines are capable of accommodating a two-party primary provided they are distinguished by row. However, they cannot record two parties on one machine now that parties would be distinguished by vertical column.

The county is compromising by placing two machines - one each for Democratic and Republican Party voters - at each location, Deputy Election Commissioner Deborah Calarco said. With a limited number of machines to go around, several polling locations were consolidated.

“It was just a logistical thing that we had to work out,” said Calarco, noting the change is unrelated to state mandates for machines compliant with the Help America Vote Act. “It shouldn't be a huge issue.”

The Board of Elections mailed correspondence to voters who will be affected by the changes.

Auburn will be divided into six polling locations by county Legislative District. Towns with multiple polling locations were converted to a single voting place.

Only Republicans and Democrats are authorized to vote in the presidential primary on Tuesday. About half of those registered voters will be affected, Calarco estimated.

The polling locations are listed online at the county Board of Elections Web site.

Absentee voters will need to physically pick up absentee ballots at the Board of Elections building, 10 Court St., Auburn, by Monday and have them postmarked by the same day to be eligible.

The usual polling locations will be restored for county primaries and elections later this year. The polls will be open noon to 9 p.m. Tuesday for the presidential primary.
