Two Cents

Why isn't more being made out of the fact that the greatest chess player in the history of the world, Bobby Fischer, just recently died at the same time, almost exactly, as, without question, unarguably, the greatest poker player and the greatest sports bettor in the history of the world, David "Chip" Reese.

When gas is $3.21 in Marcellus and $3.24 in Lansing, why is it $3.29 in Auburn?

A Christ-like person works and contributes to this society, instead of milking the system, which takes money and resources away from those that really need it.

I see it didn't take Mayor Quill and his posse long to start giving our money away.

I see the use of the Two Cents line has really gone downhill. What a shame that it isn't put to better use.

" I'm just reading this trying to figure it out.

1. Christ was poor, look at the other side of the coin. [Which you'd expect would lead to a discussion of rich people, but instead, we non sequitur to...]

2. A criminal is going to jail or is up for parole and says he accepts Jesus in his heart. He asks for forgiveness. [Are you saying those persons ARE milking the system (though it sounds more like they are trying to milk human kindness and/or gullibility, not The System}, or are you saying other people say that but you don't? But instead of a discussion criminals who claim to take Christ into their hearts, we next leap to...]

3. "Roots of past generations" [sounds like a commentary on the "criminal class" -- but it's just sort of stuck in there not attached to any other thought. ]

4. People who can't take care of themselves for health reasons. [I am guessing the poster means some people on Social Security Disability, though what that has to do with poverty, Christ or criminals, I don't know. OK, what about them?]

5. "but go to church, praise the lord?" [The disabled people go to church? Or people who support them go to church and don't care about the disabled persons? Is there a problem with one of these? Or -- huh?]

6. The poster asks if someone is saying there are 2 different meanings of "Christ-like." But whom is the poster asking? The original Two Cents poster, or all the rest of us? It seems pretty clear from our discussion that we all think there are many interpretations of Christ and Christ-like.

Even picking it apart bit by bit, I can't make heads or tails of this post.
I can't tell if these sort-of sentences are meant to be serious or sarcastic; in fact, I can't follow the reasoning or even the meaning.

I get busted for my long posts, but at least I can usually get my ideas across. This is really sad. This poster has something to say, and has taken the time to put forward thoughts and opinions, but somehow missed the boat when it came to learning how to communicate thoughts to others.

Whew.

I don't mean to be snotty, really, but, man, I tried but I do not understand a word of that previous post. "

" Totally off-topic here, but do ya want to see a perfect example of the absolutely outrageously funny preoccupation and obsession that Conservatives have with the all-encompassing demonizing term "Liberal"?
John ("I'll stay in Iraq for 100 years!"") McCain and Mitt "flip-flop" Romney now desperately resorting to the silly tactic of trying to label and tag the other as a "Liberal", as if that sheer appellation could somehow magically win them votes!
Funny yes?
But you know what's even scarier? That it just MIGHT work, given the obsessive preoccupation with the term by "dittoheads" and O'Reilly/Hannity/Hume freaks and their tendency to react in Pavlovian fashion to the mere mention of the word!
Jeez, what SHEEP! "

We seem to think OTHERS are covering our backs-but that is so not true-
I also think we are not teaching our children to pay attention to their future when it comes to politics! What we vote on now does affect them in 10/15/20 years. "

" Sales tax for Onondaga and Cayuga counties is 8%. For Franklin county (where Tupper Lake is) is 7%. The difference in the prices usually has to do with the cost of getting the gas to the area. So let's raise the fee's on route 90 (which last I heard was not necessary). "

Farmer's Gal wrote on Jan 29, 2008 7:45 AM:

" Here's one way I agree with you, cm (though I find the Republicans even more repugnant than the Democrats overall -- I don't like either of them in general): I am all for using our money here at home for our own people first and foremost instead of giving away billions in aid to "buy" the favors of other countries, or as a PR ploy to make us look humanitarian (while we are killing thousands in other countries at the same time).

I was born in the wrong era because I have always been an isolationist at heart. Really, we have no business sending our money abroad if we haven't first taken care of our own people at home.

We don't actually have any of those billions "to spare" -- it's all deficit. And we'd have buckets more money for our own people if we just stopped wasting it on an unwinnable war, first blowing up cities, then rebuiilding the very ones we just blew up -- all on our dime. "

" Did you watch the State of the Union? The Dem's response was a crock! She must have said they word "American" about 100 times-as if we are dumb and don't know what we are! She/they offered no real solutions for Americans to push their legislators towards. The only thing I disagreed with Pres Bush was on giving Africa 30 billion. Africa allready has Angelina,Brad,Madonna and Oprah-why do they need my monies too? If we as a country have 15 billion more to give then it should be given to us AMericans -divided in porportions that mean somethng to us and will be useful to us as a whole. "

You can thank our "Fine" legislators for removing the 2 buck cap on the county part of the sales tax. Remember it wasn't helping with lower gas prices, toss the bums out! Heating fuel is high and the county has sales tax on that. All the new stores etc, what is the county doing with all that extra money?

" Like many other people of genius intelligence, Bobby Fischer was a bit odd, maybe even a tad on the nuts side. However, there are times when "my" government does things that so disgust me that I can understand the urge to renounce my citizenship. It's just that I don't know that there is anyplace any better on the planet, and I'm kinda attached to my own messed up culture here. I always felt sorry for Bobby Fischer, and not because he was no longer an "American." To have so much intelligence, and to see too clearly so many things wrong with the world, and have few other people understand you -- he must have been very bitter and lonely. "

Farmer's Gal wrote on Jan 28, 2008 5:16 PM:

" I suppose it depends how you define "Christ-like." If it means everyone is imperfect and so we should be more tolerant of each other, I can live with that -- except that I meet few people who are truly tolerant. If it means you have to walk on unfrozen water, change substances like water to wine (not a bad trick -- give me a couple months and I'll tap the barrel), raise people from the dead (when we are already seriously overpopulated on this planet), and forgive people who hurt you even if they are going to shoot your head off, well, not too many of those around. Or maybe you just have to have the right hair, in which case, Karl wins.... "

" Figure this, the U.S. Economy slows and the rest of the world worries. You do know that the price of a barrel of oil fell when the bad reports came out on our economy? Around $10 a barrel. So, maybe us U.S. consumers should think of ourselves first and stop our "extra spending" and start saving instead. Maybe the price of gas will begin to drop.

Christ-like person statement- Dumb! We are all Christ-like and we all need help. And since the SYSTEM is government run and Christ is religion they don't mix. To stop the "give away" we have to stop raising taxes and fee's and weed out the milkers.

The price of gas in Tupper Lake, NY last week was $3.35 (Low end) So what are you complaining about????

Bobby Fischer and David "Chip" Reese both dead. And this effects my life how?? "

" Why should we be worrying if the cost of gas in neighboring lands is 4 or 8 cents cheaper? It's an extra buck or two at the pump. We should be more irritated as to why the cost of gas is still so stinking high - and is the very reason for the economic decline. "

Farmer's Gal wrote on Jan 28, 2008 12:18 PM:

" How many Christ-like persons are we likely to see in a life-time? Seriously, now. What an odd comment.

I have to disagree on the use of Two Cents. We used to have a lot more sniping at each other and stupid comments. While that has not died out completely, there are now long-ranging coversations, discussions and disputes on serious news issues, local, national, international and philosophical. Personally, I think the space is maturing well (though I still think it was a step backwards to remove the print version). "
