A 2007 Cato-Meridian High School graduate was killed Saturday morning in a head-on collision on Route 370 in Cato.
State Police in Auburn said Andrew Mapley, 18, of Cato, was westbound at about 7:20 a.m. Saturday when his vehicle crossed over into the eastbound lane, where it crashed into a pickup truck coming the other way.
Mapley was later pronounced dead at the scene of the crash. The other driver, Stephen Gigliotti, 43, of Wolcott, was taken to University Hospital in Syracuse with a broken foot and a cut to his head, police said. Gigliotti's two teenage passengers were also taken to University Hospital, and were both treated and released.
Police said their preliminary investigation revealed only that failure to keep right was a factor in the crash.
Cato-Meridian High School listed Mapley on its High Honor Roll in 2007.
Saturday's crash is the second tragedy to hit the family in recent years.
Five years ago this month, Andrew Mapley's brother, Cody, 16, a junior at Cato-Meridian High School, was killed in an accident in Cato involving two snowmobiles.
Cody Mapley had been riding a snowmobile that slid into a drainage ditch alongside a road.
Andrew, who was 13 at the time, was one of two boys riding behind Cody, and that snowmobile also went into the ditch, landing on top of Cody.
