A 23-year-old Auburn man died and a 22-year-old Cato man was injured in a car accident Thursday evening, the Auburn Police Department said.
Nathan T. Vargason died at University Hospital in Syracuse. Christopher L. Stinson remains in the Syracuse hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.
A two-door Toyota the two men were riding in slid into a telephone pole on the east side of North Division Street south of Wall Street at 11:50 p.m. Thursday, police said.
The 1993 Toyota was traveling southbound on North Division Street when the driver likely lost control while in the Wall Street intersection, police said. The car struck the pole on the passenger side. Emergency responders had to extract both men from the car.
Auburn police said Friday they had still not determined who was driving the car because neither man was wearing a seat belt and both were thrown around in the crash. Also, police don't know where the men were heading and where they had been before the accident. The APD also said it is investigating whether alcohol was a factor in the crash. They did blame speeding with slippery road conditions for contributing to the accident.
The department's accident reconstruction team is investigating the accident.
Police will examine the car's damage, review Vargason's autopsy, look at blood tests, and interview participants to determine more information about the accident.
