A 22-year-old Auburn man died and a 22-year-old Cato man was injured in a car accident Thursday evening, the Auburn Police Department said.

Nathan T. Vargason died at University Hospital in Syracuse. Christopher L. Stinson remains in the Syracuse hospital with injuries that are not life-threatening.

A two-door Toyota the two men were riding in slid into a telephone pole on the east side of North Division Street south of Wall Street, police said.

Police said it is unclear at this point who was driving the vehicle. The Auburn Police Department said it is also investigating whether alcohol was a factor in the crash. They did blame speeding with slippery road conditions for contributing to the accident.
