The Mutton Hill Road bridge in Sennett will be closed while damages caused Monday by a motor vehicle accident are repaired.
Sennett highway superintendent James Smith said the state Department of Transportation has indefinitely closed the bridge due to severe structural damage. According to authorities, a pickup truck ran into the side of the bridge, located on Mutton Hill Road between Grant Avenue and County House Road, early Monday morning. Smith said drivers will have to take an alternate route, but he has “no idea how long” the bridge will be closed. An engineering group will have to assess the damage to see the extent of the repairs needed.
The accident occurred at 7:07 a.m. when a 2004 Chevrolet pickup heading south struck the side of the bridge. The driver, Jesse J. Cornell, 27, of Port Byron, was taken by ambulance to Auburn Memorial Hospital for an arm injury, according to the Cayuga County Sheriff's Office.
He was also issued tickets for alleged failure to maintain the lane and alleged failure to wear a seat belt, according to the sheriff's office.
