The Auburn Police Department has filed new charges against an Auburn man whom they arrested last week on an accusation of child pornography possession.
Robert L. Smith, 32, of 141 Van Anden St., was arrested Tuesday on the felony charge of first-degree sexual abuse as well as endangering the welfare of a child, a misdemeanor. Police said Smith sexually abused a 7-year-old in October at his residence.

Smith was arrested during an appearance in Auburn City Court on the child pornography charges, which were lodged against him last week after police investigators accused him of possessing illegal photographs on his computer.

Smith was arraigned on the new charges in city court and remanded to county jail. According to the APD, further charges related to the alleged abuse are not expected. However, the investigation surrounding the alleged possession of child pornography is still underway, and new charges may be filed, police said.
