GE Sensing & Inspection Technologies opened its new, $6-million Skaneateles Falls facility Monday.
About 165 GE employees will be employed at the plant, which is located at 721 Visions Drive.
The facility, which company officials estimate will create at least 50 new high-tech jobs in the region during the next five years, will be responsible for designing and manufacturing remote visual inspection equipment for non-destructive testing in the aerospace, oil and gas, and power-generation industries.
“We are excited to move into the new facility and remain in Skaneateles,” plant manager Dick Mitchell said in a news release. “We are committed to this community and are happy to be staying in the area.”
In the summer of 2005, GE Inspection Technologies purchased Welch Allyn's Everest VIT subsidiary, and GE and Welch Allyn's Lighting Products Division had been sharing the same Jordan Road building ever since.
Representatives from both companies had talked about the space crunch each was feeling.
GE broke ground for its Visions Drive facility on April 23, 2007.
The facility is 73,700 square feet and allows for a potential future expansion to 85,700 square feet.
Empire State Development, the New York state agency that provides assistance and service to businesses to encourage economic investment in the state, provided GE with a $500,000 grant.
