ELBRIDGE - Snowmobiling is a fun way to pass the winter months along for many; joining a snowmobile club ensures that riders will have a safe experience.
Designated snowmobiling trails scattered throughout Cayuga County are maintained regularly by volunteer members of these clubs.
It is also these snowmobile clubs that fund the trails' maintenance.
Through membership dues and other fundraisers, members spend countless hours during the winter grooming and making sure that cautionary signs are placed along these trails.
“We maintain 85 miles of trails throughout both Cayuga and Onondaga counties,” said Dave Tripp during the eighth annual Antique Snowmobile Show and chicken barbecue held at Owens Orchards in Elbridge, Sunday afternoon. “The proceeds from these events go back into the club to be used for trail maintenance.”
The event is hosted by the Weedsport Winter Wanderers, Inc.
Tripp, who also owns Owens Orchards, said that he began hosting the event as a fundraiser to help with the rising costs of maintenance.
Members said that the show is a family event that brings many snowmobile enthusiasts from all over.
This year's event had registered participants from as far away as New Jersey.
In addition to the cost of trail maintenance, Tripp said, the club recently purchased a new trail groomer costing $100,000.
“This year's proceeds will help to pay for the new groomer,” he said.
Tripp said that maintaining the trails is a snowmobile club responsibility and they receive no government aid in helping with the costs.
The show featured antique snowmobiles that have been painstakingly restored, as well as some that, for sentimental reasons, have not been tampered with at all.
Guests were given a ballot to judge the snowmobiles on different criteria as they browsed the various setups.
In addition to the voting, guests were also invited to enter a raffle to win a restored snowmobile that was donated to the club.
Proceeds from the raffle will be donated to the Children's Hospital in Syracuse.
According to club members, the antique snowmobile show is a prelude to a bigger show, the Great Eastern Whiteout.
The Great Eastern Whiteout is also hosted by the Weedsport Winter Wanderers Inc., and is set to be held in February, at the Rolling Wheels Raceway Park.
