Tempers flare at Auburn school board meeting

AUBURN -- Tempers flared and voices were raised as Auburn Enlarged City School District Board of Education members discussed Holland Stadium's role in a proposed capital project Monday.
The board is proposing an estimated $14.9 million capital project of which $3.5 million would be earmarked for renovations at Holland Stadium, including concrete work, lighting, the installation of synthetic turf, enhancing the walking track and additional parking.

The board's Long Range Planning Committee held a work session Monday to answer any questions board members had on the capital plan as well as go through the list of identified priorities and discern whether those priorities were appropriate or needed to be reviewed.

Board member Joe Leogrande voiced strong objections to the inclusion of Holland Stadium in the proposed capital project that is expected to go before voters in May.

"I think this is a frivolous expense," he said. "I think this is a waste of money."

Board member Bill Andre responded by asking Leogrande what exactly he was objecting to.

"Why does Auburn, why does this community, why does the varsity sports teams that use it, why do my kids use it, why should I sit there and watch this stuff," Andre asked. "Why do I not deserve that Holland Stadium be what it should be? I don't understand."

Playing the role of the mediator, Susan Scheuerman said, "I think I understand the merit of the question. I don't believe it's a 'this or that, either it's in or it's out.' I think there's room for discussion what we as a board consider valuable to our students."

" If Holland Stadium needs upgrades why not put a plea out to all the great locally owned business in the area? Maybe they would be willing to donate their time if the district buys the supplies and fix the current field and update a few things...3 Million dollars seems like a ton of money for a sports complex. As a former Auburn taxpayer I can relate to the residents being upset about the latest proposal. Last years vote should have told the board what the taxpayers feel...the economy is in the dumps and everyone is tightening their belts... "

" Why shoud the taxpayers pay for the synthetic turf. We voted it down once. If you want to fix up Holland Stadium that is one thing but forget about the turf. "

" First off I've been a varsity coach for 8 years and have played at schools that do have turf fields. I can tell you that while they look pretty schools do not need artificial turf fields. Disticts frequently put many restrictions on their usage (preventing practices on it etc.)to help preserve it. But what's the point of paying so much money for it if its only going to used a couple times a week for ganmes. Wealthier communities like Canandaigua have turned down turf, what makes Auburn think that should be a top priority. Auburn has many other concerns that need to be dealt with first. School boards like flashy projects becuase they can point to it and say "Look what I did!" while adding a teaching position to reduce class size isn't nearly as sexy. "

" Mr. Andre, what is it you don't understand? A year or so ago the residents of the Auburn School district voted NO to the turf project, thats not hard to understand is it? Why should you sit there and watch this stuff, what stuff? Holland stadium is what it should be, and its not worth 3 million to be what you think it should be. You and the rest of the School Board should be more worried as to why the gradution rate is so low, why are the students test scores so low? why is the drop out level so high? why is the truancy rate so high? and because the football team won one state title in I don't how many years, doesn't mean you need to spend 3 million dollars to do somthing the voters already rejected. The students come first, not your egos. "

" Where I lived in the Adirondacks the sports programs set up a Boosters Club. This club raised money and built the school a new football stadium. The cost of the stadium was not part of the budget and did not cost the tax payers a dime. Money was raised from local sponsors and a lot of the work was done by volunteers. However, we went with natural grass and it looks great. Our teams do not practice on the new field, games only, they use the old field for practice. Even today the Booster club raises the money for the school sports programs. Saving tax payers a lot of money. Plus since it was not in the school budget the boosters actually collected more than what they would have received in the budget. Over the years they have built a new football stadium, baseball field and soccer field, plus made improvements to existing fields. They have even improved the walking tails around the schools. If your wondering, school taxes there are lower than they are here. So if you want the school board to get your message VOTE the budget down as long as they have the stadium spending in the budget. I don't live in Auburn so it's not my taxes going up. "

" Bill Andre is the type of board member who reflects what is wrong in this School District. He was elected to promote the wishes of those who elected him, not vote on issues that effect just his kids. My children play sports in this district and I firmly believe that I should pay for his involvement in sports and it should not be every taxpayers' responsibility. Regardless what Pabis says the district is responsible for the education of the children first and foremost. With Auburns' high drop out rates and low state state scores the focus should be on the students not turf that the district has already voted no on. Pabis, Andre and the rest of the tax and spend board members need be more fically responsible and stop putting the District further in debt. "

" I agree as much as I love to run at Holland Stadium, I think the board and administrators have lost their focus.

These kids are struggling today and the atitudes are half the problem. The administratrs come down on the teachers and the teachers God bless appear helpless at times. Why don't you give some of that money to the teachers?

I honestly think Auburn has lost its focus and that is why I want to pull my children out of the Auburn Schools. "

" Improvement is always needed. Upgrading Holland Stadium should always be taken into consideration. The only thing I ask is somewhere work the name of 'Dick Brown' into a permanent plaque to be placed at the 'new' and 'improved' stadium. "

"Why do I not deserve that Holland Stadium be what it should be? I don't understand."---because ALL the kids do NOT PLAY SPORTS, and ALL the people do not go watch it! And ALL the people and ALL the people's kids should benefit from such largess if it is available!
It's amazing that some people have such a vested interest in this that they don't see that! SPEND THE MONEY "IN" SCHOOL! "

" Turf is not needed, and yet they want tot talk about it while our schools are receiving bad grades. We do need to spend more money in the district, but to improve the Curricular Experince, not the EXTRA stuff. More Teachers and technology for the kids, not improved PLAYING surfaces. "

Synthetic turf has given athletes staph infections. Some have died from the infection. Moving forward on synthetic turf with this liability known is a lawsuit just waiting to happen.

Everyone talks about going green ... stick with the grass not the petroleum based synthetic turf. "

" Holland Stadium should be fixed up BUT not to the tune of 3 million dollars! If we deduct the turf of 2 million and then spend 100grand we can let the band play at half time for home games!!! "
