HIT: To the state Department of Health's decision to keep the maternity unit at Auburn Memorial Hospital open.
The ruling reverses an earlier recommendation from a state panel that had reviewed facilities statewide.
It's not often when you see a state agency essentially admit a mistake, and in this case, the health department also decided to give the hospital a hefty grant to help bolster AMH's maternity services.
Kudos to all involved in getting this deal done.
HIT: To Centro's new transfer station on Lincoln Street. The new station will make it easier for bus riders to connect to Centro's routes throughout Cayuga County and also to Syracuse.
The station's location also is safer for bus riders in that they don't have to cross the street like the previous one and a planned camera will be monitored by police, increasing safety.
Buses can help reduce pollution by reducing the number of cars on the road and can be a life saver for people that don't own a car.
MISS: To the vandalizing of - and theft of coins from - two soda machines in Auburn, causing thousands of dollars in damages. We can't understand how someone could do so much damage to someone else's property - and risk being sent to jail - to steal some coins.
HIT: To the return of Dennis Holmberg as Auburn Doubledays manager for a seventh consecutive season. Call it a victory lap, as Holmberg comes back off the team's first solo New York-Penn League championship since 1973.
Holmberg has become a part of the community and his recent visit from his Florida home to attend Chuck Savage's funeral services must be noted. Holmberg will also be back in town next month for the Doubledays Hot Stove Dinner.
Auburn fans know very well that Holmberg has won the Pinckney Division title the previous six years he's been the manager.
Let's wish Holmberg good luck for his seventh season in Auburn.
