Montezuma planning board members are still reeling from a decision made by the town board at its year-end meeting Tuesday night.
Their entire planning board was dissolved, and they had no inkling that they wouldn't be reappointed.

An executive session was unexpectedly called, and when the meeting resumed, William S. Saroodis, town supervisor, said he was not making any appointments to the planning board and dissolving this one, according to John Melnick, planning board member.

"We were all expecting to be reappointed," said Joe Verdi, planning board chairman. "It was like a slap in the face or a kick in the shin."

Another planning board member, Gwen Ellinwood, asked on what Saroodis based his decision.

"He said, 'Common sense,'" Melnick said. "He said he wasn't happy with the way the planning board was operating."

The town supervisor asked planning board members who wished to re-apply for their positions to submit a letter of intent or a resume before the next town board meeting. An advertisement for new board members was also being drafted.

" Rumor has it that Town Board feels that Montezuma is going to be ran their way again. I feel that the only people who get to have anything to do with the town are people who will do as the board says and not questions what they tell/instruct you to do. At this meeting it was announced by Auburn Bio Diesel Representative that he is ready to approach the planning board to move forward with their plans. "

" It could also have something to do with a newly proposed Bio Deisl Fuel company looking to come into town. Someone has a hand in a deep pocket here. Who is it? The town board? The supervisor? "

" I wonder if this doesn't have to do with the proposed pig CAFO -- maybe corporate interests have bought out the supervisor to get rid of the opposition, that is, if the planning board was intending to stick to the interests of their constituents. I'm not in Montezuma or following it closely, so I could be off-base, but I have seen this sort of thing happen in other places, like Pennsylvannia. "
