SKANEATELES - Joan Ashby's name goes hand-in-hand with the Women's Citizen Masters, and why not?
She has finished runner-up in the bowling tournament four times, including three in a row from 1994-96. So it shouldn't be a surprise that Ashby was the high scorer Sunday on the second day of qualifying at Cedar House Lanes.

She overcame a 171 start by making a deft ball change. She tacked on games of 204 and 226 for a 601 series.

“Cedar House isn't usually a good-scoring place for me,” said Ashby, who is also tournament director. “I just stayed within my game and did OK.”

Twenty-two women took to the lanes Sunday, bringing the entry total to 46. Chick Pidlypchak, with her 509, secured the final spot in the field of 32. Those players will join defending champion Denise Ryan for match play, which starts 1 p.m. Saturday at Starlite Lanes.

Other top scorers Sunday were: Patty Wright (597), K.C. Lorey (582), Kelly Blaisdell (580) Lorrie Bradtke (580), Kara Mettler (568) and Sharon Mills (565).

For the past couple of years, Ashby has dealt with a sore right arm and hip problems. She's feeling better now, and it showed Sunday.

After her slow start, in which she couldn't carry the stubborn 10-pin, Ashby changed equipment.

“I switched to a more reactive ball and moved left. I got smarter,” she said.

And perhaps Ashby got more comfortable as she went along. Even with her years of Masters experience, she admitted to some butterflies in the early going.

“Yes, I still get nervous. It happens all the time,” she said.

So with one hurdle taken care of, Ashby can now focus on finally winning the championship that has eluded her. On that subject, she's keeping an open mind.

“Anything can happen,” she said. “We're going into the head-to-head matches, and every pin counts.”

It's safe to say Ashby will go after every one of them.
