Consider the spirit of building code laws

Monday, January 14, 2008 11:53 AM EST

Individuals living in Auburn more than 30 years may remember that we had building codes that were not enforced.
Two family dwellings gobbled up to make four or five tiny apartments and on and on.

For whatever reason renters feel no responsibility to maintain the interior or the exteriors of the property. We now have a built-in code and an inspector that functions.

I would like to set up a little scenario.

You work, you pay your taxes, you may even go out and buy lumber for a do-it yourself project on your own property.

You might take the plunge to hire a contractor. No one can deny the necessity for having building permits. It's the law.

This law, like most laws, is enacted for the welfare of the public - extract the money from a property owner just for the privilege of enhancing one's property and hoping to beautify the city of Auburn.

The irony of this is your property tax will increase. I would like someone in city hall to consider the spirit of the law.

" Some people just do the right thing and fix their home because they have pride such as Dan W. If you increase the value of your home the taxes go up. What else can be done? Each time you increase the value of your home the taxes go down? The only payoff is that you protect the value of your home. The people that neglect their homes will lose the integrity and the value of their investment. Also Stan's letter was confusing as he opened with a discussion of rental properties then changed to his own home. "

" Mindless rambling that makes absolutely no sense. "

" The only break I ever recived on any major home improvement. Was not having to pay sales tax. On a $18,000 septic system upgrade. Or sales tax on the new roof. There is no sales tax on a capital improvement. I had two honest contractors. I signed taxforms for the state to exempt the work. Since I keep my home nice looking. Outside and inside, get bulding permits for upgrades. My assesment is almost double than house near me. That has been neglected. The house has not had a coat of paint. In the 16 yrs that I know of. The yard looks like its a junk yard. I live outside the city. It sure explains part of the shabby houses in Auburn. I get my reward twice a year. In a tax bill that is higher. Because I have pride in my home. "

" brew.
Not if it's your private home.
Stan didn't say his rental property.
If you fix up your house your taxes will go up and between what you paid to fix your home and the increase in tax, you will never get it back!!!!! "

" You get federal tax deductions for the expenses incurred and the value of your property increases and you will probably increase your tenants rent. So what is your problem? "
