JORDAN - People in Jordan came in out of the cold Saturday evening for a home-cooked meal, quality social time with friends and neighbors, and to help out a local church.
Members of the Jordan United Methodist Church hoped their guests found satisfaction in all three.
“It is a good time,” said church member Ethel Ebling during the roast pork dinner held at the church Saturday. “It is a lot of fun.”
The dinner, according to Ebling, is prepared from scratch at the church to ensure the tastiest meal.
“The pie committee comes in on Friday to bake the pies,” she said. “And the rest of the dinner is prepared right at the church as well.”
Consisting of the traditional dinner fare of roast pork, mashed potatoes, vegetable, and pie for desert, the dinner was served by a committee of volunteer waiters and waitresses.
“There are about 30 people who help with the dinner,” Ebling said. “From a committee to prepare the food, waiting the tables, and even a clean-up committee.”
According to Ebling, the church will typically feed about 150 people and raise about $800.
Proceeds from the dinner will be added to the church's regular fund and will be used for the upkeep of the church.
“Throughout the year we hold different fundraisers,” Ebling said. “We have dinners, pie and bake sales, and other special event fundraisers. The monies raised are in addition to the regular church contributions.”
In addition to the sit down dinner, Ebling said that the church also offers the dinners as a take-out, and for locals who cannot come to the church, members will also deliver the food to their door. The foods for the dinner are not donated but rather purchased by the church, but all of the work that is put into the dinner is completed by church members on a volunteer basis.
