Warriors roll past Black Knights

WEEDSPORT - Fortunately for the Tully boys basketball team, it was over almost as soon as it began.
Weedsport built a double-digit first-quarter lead and coasted to a 53-28 OHSL Patriot victory Friday night.

The Warriors led by 12 after one quarter, and the Black Knights could never get within single digits.

“We just got into a great rhythm and they couldn't slow us down tonight,” said Weedsport coach Matt Lipiska.

Though Tully isn't a small team by any means, Weedsport was able to crash the boards and nearly eliminate the Black Knights' second-chance shots.

“When my big men are working hard and they're active, they're tough,” Lipiska said. “They've been working hard for the past three or four games, rebounding well and controlling the glass. It's good tonight that we can come out and have a dominating win in front of a big crowd.”

On the flip side, the Warriors had a 20-7 advantage on the offensive glass. Though Weedsport didn't convert many of their second chances, they were clicking on both sides of the ball enough to take a 28-6 lead midway through the second quarter.

“We were getting some good looks,” Lipiska said. “I bet we shot over 40-percent tonight, which is pretty good for a high school team. When you shoot 40-percent usually your second-chance shots are limited.

“They were missing, and we were pushing and getting a lot of easy baskets so that contributed too.”

Poor shooting, from the floor and from the foul line, also doomed the Black Knights. Tully had made a mere eight buckets (just one in a 17-2 Weedsport-dominated third quarter), before it closed the game with four straight baskets.

Tully was held scoreless for over eight minutes in the second quarter.

“This year we've played great defense on our home floor, and we play a pretty solid zone,” Lipiska said. “It forced them to shoot from the perimeter and I think that's their weakness.”

Justin McDeid led the Warriors with 15 points and nine rebounds. Jimmy Bos added nine points, six boards and three steals, while Opie Jordan pitched in with seven points and seven rebounds.

Weedsport (7-5) will have to switch it up next at 8-3 Fabius-Pompey. The Falcons are almost the opposite of the Warriors, getting most of their points from their guards and do not have a lot of size.

“They've got some very solid guards that we have to get a defensive game plan for, but they don't really have a big man,” Lipiska said. “So as much as we have to game-plan for them, they have to game-plan for us.”
