Two Cents

Do you still have your Christmas stuff up?
As senior citizens, we cannot see how the kiosks will be an advantage for the elderly. Currently, after a heavy snowfall, you can't get to the meter, or the sidewalk, from a parking space on the street due to snow accumulation.

While I don't receive The Citizen, I can appreciate the fact that you send out the weekly little excerpts from the weekend and you drop them off to all the homes on the outskirts of Auburn. The thing is when you throw them by our mailbox, put plastic on them.

Mr. Editor, I don't include my name on my opinions because I do not want some stupid judge, lawyer, politician or bureaucrat to make me a criminal for my lawful actions since the 1930s.

In 1935-36, fifth- and sixth-graders use to bring .22s and shotguns to school to shoot on the range during gym and hunt squirrels, rabbits, pheasants on the way home. Nobody ever threatened anyone else, ever.

Where did Bush get the $30 billion to give over to Israel when he can't even have health care here in the United States?

"Where to next?" is designed to pause its rotation on a mouseover, as well as instantly flip content when you mouseover the tabs on top.

If this doesn't work for you, please let me know: rich.bellamy@auburnpub.com "

" Widgetmc, I too used to get the print paper when I moved, I signed for a year subscription--I agree with either hardly getting it mailed to you or getting it in bundles of 10 in one day? Who does the mailing for these? Customers wouldn't cancel if they were in a timely manner. "

" BTW, cm, a friend of mine ended up with that convicted woman's grandson's pony, as well as her horses. She deserved the penalty she got, but there's no reason the animals should suffer. I see them every day out in the pasture with the other animals and am glad for them. (I'd bet there were other people wondering what happened to those animals). "

" Widget, Widget, Widget....where do I begin? First of all, you don't GET it. You log on to their website and READ it. Secondly, it doesn't cost you one penny to READ the on-line version of the Citizen. If you don't like the new format, DON'T READ IT!!! It's that simple. "

steve w wrote on Jan 13, 2008 5:02 PM:

" I find it so funny how people get agitated by the comments left here by other users. Let me start by writing a 1000 word essay about everyone's comments like Farmer girl does. "

" I am a former resident of Auburn but moved to Florida in 1988. I get the Citizen on line and do not like the new format for the on-line paper at all. Who's bright idea was it to change the format? I used to subscribe to the Citizen but discovered that about half of the time I was not receiving the paper and when I did I would get 6 or 7 at one time, all over a week old. Therefore, I prefer to get it on line. Please go back to the old format.

" The crime is up because the judges are way LAX! If these judges would stop falling for "my grandon will loose his horse, My baby won't be breastfed if I am in jail, and My kids won't collect child support if I don't work and go to jail"-boohoohoo I can give a slap on the wrist for a first time minor offense-BUT come on,how many slaps does one continue to get??? Sometimes I think people with college degrees have no common sense!!! Shame on the judges of Auburn! "

" I'm thinking maybe The Citizen is afraid/has been obliquely threatened with some kind of legal action due to publishing unattributed comments in print? Honestly, though, public figures are open to criticism in a way private citizens are not -- part and parcel of being a public citizen. But you can see there was a strong interest in non-Internet folks to see their words in print by the way the comments have dried up since they took the print away.

naturelover -- I like a good glass of wine myself, whether local or imported. I wasn't busting your chops so much as Steve's -- lots of us disagree and it makes the discussion lively. But Steve's coming down on ANGMOM3 after she explained why she had been using all caps was uncalled-for.

ANGMOM3 -- hope you won't be put off or let your voice be stifled. You just have to have a little bit of a thick skin in this-here online community. I haven't followed your posts and have no opinion on your opinions per se except that you have every right to them and I hope we keep hearing from you.

Cheers -- I'm late for the Colts kick-off and it's time to go.

Go Giants! (Even as a fan, I know they are not a Superbowl quality team, but I would sure love to see them win against Dallas) "

" I agree that eliminating the published two cents and readers comments is a terrible loss to the paper and my interest in it. The blogs are el boro also. The local paper should be about Auburn citizens for Auburn citizens - all walks of life. I dont know how many ideas I have run by some of the staff at the paper by em'g them to various individuals @lee.net. They just seem to fall on deaf ears. Also, where do they get the ideas about the people they choose to highlight w/the pic and ?'s? Surely we must have more interesting people than Joe Blow, 17, lives w/mom and dad, and flips pizza and wants to open a tiki bar on Hawaii? Citizen lets get with the program and do some real gritty stories on what matters to us tax paying citizens who decided to stay in this town and beautify our little corner of the world. Diversity is truly lacking. "

" You know, I have to say that I was reading the paper yesterday--yes the REAL paper!--and I have to observe, and ask--what the hell has the Citizen gained by losing the "two cents" section? They haven't even replaced that section with ANYTHING interesting--just a goofy graphic and a bunch of wasted words--NOTHING at all compelling or even remotely interesting. And then even the "Citizen's say" section they used to have--replaced by the boooooring, tepid clips from the so-far pretty LAME blogs on the site. I mean, really, I used to open the first page and just devour he first page, and now it's like, just another reason NOT to re-subscribe. Citizen, I just don't know what the hell the Citizen was thinking. The new website is OK, but truthfully, I really like the OLD one better. And what's with the lack of letters to the editor? Hey Citizen--how about a religious blog? That'll get things fired up around here! "

nature lover wrote on Jan 13, 2008 10:39 AM:

" Welp I appologize...and I thank my defenders. Perhaps I had one too many glasses of wine yesterday (as we replenished our supply) and went one two many steps up on my soap box. BTW, NYS wine is truly thee best and VERY deelicious!! HEY what is with the crime spree here in Auburn? stabbings, 14 yo robbing a cab driver? Yikes !! "

" my apologies for being the source of annoyance. it won't happen again. "

Farmer's Gal wrote on Jan 13, 2008 9:42 AM:

" Steve -- You don't have to get snorky about it. Yes, it is very annoying when people write in all caps, and very difficult to read as well, and yes, the convention is that this is read as shouting.

But -- now we know the reason ANGMOM3 uses all caps is because she's visually impaired. You have a good suggestion that she try using the browser's "increase font size" feature -- that way she'll be able to see what's she's typing without being misinterpreted or annoying to others. It's a good suggestion, but it could have been given with a bit more consideration and good will now you know that ANGMOM3 wasn't writing in all caps to be a jerk.

Disagree with her opinions and take her to task for that, after all, that's what this space is for -- but chill on her disability; you never know when it could be you or someone you love. If you were using all caps because you couldn't see what you were typing well, and you didn't know about the increase font size feature (or you'd tried it and it didn't work), how would you like someone to talk to you about it?

Put yourself in someone else's shoes for a minute before you rake 'em over the coals.

Your Voice of Reason for the Day, signing off.... "

steve w wrote on Jan 13, 2008 4:04 AM:

" AngMom, you are shouting... ALL CAPS IS CONSIDERED SHOUTING. USE THE NICE FEATURE AND ENLARGE THE FONT! "

" Dear ANGMOM3, TYVM for YELLING on the post yesterday - guess your handle truly fits your personality. I get SO flippin' sick of hearing people belly ache why things are done this way or that, like they need it all customized because they are SPECIAL! Arent we all? The old saying you cant please everyone all the time truly makes more sense as the populice encounters more people that think they need the government, etc to make an exception JUST for them because they are different. For example, if the "government" were to give every American a porterhouse steak - there would be a great percentage that would complain that either they have no teeth or are vegatarian, etc - because they are different, they expect things to be customized for them. When has ingenuity and intelligence gone to? Rather than complain they should think of ways to utilize that steak - perhaps barter it. I know this is far fetched scenario, but if people would use their BRAINS instead of their belly aching prowess, this world would be a better place. I mean all the complaints about this offends me or I cant use that or bla flippin' bla, I am sure this will be misconstued and I will get flack that will make no sense. Cheers "

" I think they only time I park close enough to downtown that I have to feed a meter is when I have to go to the DMV.

I got the last of my holiday ornaments down last weekend, and have only one more string of lights to remove from my otherwise denuded tree. I saw somewhere the week after Christmas a listing of numbers to call to recycle your tree -- the one for Aurora said call this number, then just leave the tree by the road and they'd come pick it up. Anyone know that number? (I never take my tree down until at least 12 days past Christmas).

No, one incident doesn't start a war, and at any given time any given country may have hundreds of irritations going on with other nations, but there is usually some single incident that sparks things into open and official conflict, i.e. war. Part of why it is so hard to sort out afterwards is because there were all those smaller annoyances all along.

Also, the reason politicians give the public for going to war are almost never the real reason, or certainly not the main reason -- that's just the reason most likely to inspire the public to back a war.

"

cm wrote on Jan 12, 2008 8:48 AM:

" I agree with you "Yikes"-downtown is now good for going to court or visiting your attorney. All the best old stores are gone like Nolan's Shoes & Sports, The Big Store, and York Jewelers. The 1 seeming to hold on is PBJ. Maybe they should do away with parking fees entirely. How much revenue due they actually make off them and could it be directed another form sucking your wallet dry if the meters were gone? "

Yikes wrote on Jan 12, 2008 12:21 AM:

" CM....I think you may have answered your own question. Do you pay to park at Walmart? It simply amazes me why anyone would pay to park downtown for any reason whatsoever. Please provide me a scenario for absolutely needing to go downtown. Thanks. "

cm wrote on Jan 11, 2008 10:53 PM:

" I would have to agree-after a snowplow has gone thru downtown how would one get to a meter or a kiosk?
I still say they should sell a monthly parking pass--one you can reload at the kiosks or your nearby walmart! lol "

" I took down my Xmas decorations today! really I did! I stare at a "naked" tree that will be someones mulch in the spring. The house looks so bare-so sad to see the "spirit" disappearing one ornament at a time..enough sadness of my FAV holiday gone for another 11 months--time to break out the Valentines stuff--I have to keep up the "Jones/Walmart!!" "

cm wrote on Jan 11, 2008 10:44 PM:

" do you really believe that ONE SOLE incident begins a war?? It's a multitude of things happening over many many years..A war is a HUGE family dispute-it started out small with words-over money,or over land/territory,the wife/mistriss--when words didn't get problems solved, others in the family joined in to follow suite. When the voices of many were still not heeded the weapons were brought in. Today family A will kill 20 of family B and tomorrow 25 of family B will kill 35 of family A..and the week/months/years continue on..A war is NEVER over ONE incident!!!! "
