One Cayuga County juvenile residential facility will close and another will see its bed count reduced in half under a plan announced Friday by the state Office of Children and Family Services.
The Auburn Residential Center is one of six facilities that will be closed a year from Friday under the plan. The Lansing Residential Center, also in Cayuga County, will see its bed count drop in half.

Auburn Residential Center is a non-secure facilities for girls 13 to 17 years old. It has 24 beds but just three children, along with 25 full-time positions.

The Lansing facility is a limited secure environment with 100 beds but 48 children. It has 32 full-time positions.

The state says it will try to help staff secure positions at other facilities. Families of children will be called with further details on the process.

" What a real shame! As a volunteer in that facility I saw what a top notch job the staff has done with the girls. On several occasions girls told me that if it weren't for ARC they would be dead. "

" Seems that since all the juvenile facilities downstate are filled to capacity and beyond, newly appointed OCFS commissioner Gladys Carrion Esq. can't see beyond NYC. I believe it's time for us to let our elected officials know exactly how we feel about more upstate jobs lost!!! "

" Wow - a year from Friday? Sounds like officials are on top of this one. Another fine example of tax dollars at work. "
