The family of Maria Angelina Cavatelli has cordially invited you to attend the wedding of their daughter and Guisseppe Antonio Gnocchi. There is no need to RSVP. All they ask is that you come ready to have a good time.
“Joey and Maria's Comedy Wedding,” will be thrown Friday at the Springside Inn in Fleming. The interactive dinner theater production has been pleasing Auburn audiences for five years. This year, attendees will also be supporting a local cause - the E. John Gavras Center, which offers numerous services to regional residents with special needs.
The show, which is a combination of scripted and improvisational performance, is run like an actual wedding and reception. Audience members are the “guests,” and the cast plays the wedding party, which includes Joey and Maria, friends, family, clergy and even a jealous ex-girlfriend.
While the group seems to be typical of any wedding, “Joey and Maria's” special day promises to be anything but typical for either a wedding or a theater show. Nancy Calocerinos of Great Lakes Production, the Rochester company that produces the event throughout New York state, said the staff is trained to get the guests involved with the show.
“The show is different every time you see it because of the audience,” Calocerinos said. “We have performed for a group of World War II veterans, as well as audiences with an average age of 30 to 35. One time we did a sorority convention made up primarily of women.”
The Springside Inn has hosted the show multiple times in past years. However, this is the first year the Auburn Rotary Club will help sponsor the event and give proceeds from ticket and raffle sales to the Gavras Center.
Rotary member Barb Murdoch said that the center is a worthy organization because of all the work it does through numerous programs for children and adults in the community. Murdoch added that the show is attractive as a fundraiser because this will not be the first time it is held.
The club has not handled a fund-raiser like this before, and it will be nice to be involved with something that is already well-organized, she said.
“It works by itself because it has been done so many times before,” said Murdoch, who is on the Rotary board of directors.
While the event itself may be well-organized, audiences have come to expect a raucous party, according to Springside Inn owner Sean Lattimore. Lattimore said his favorite part about the wedding is the show's energy.
“I remember one show where we watched everyone get up and start dancing,” Lattimore said. “Every single person in the whole room was out of their seat and moving around.”
