Forfeits cost Union Springs

UNION SPRINGS - Forfeits are tough to come back from, especially when they happen in clusters.
Luckily for the Union Springs wrestling team, while it gave up 24 points on forfeits against Marathon, the Olympians took three of their own. But a 24-18 Marathon lead before anyone took the mats soon snowballed into a 42-12 lead. The Wolves, though, earned some late points in the 48-24 loss in the second annual Union Springs Alumni Night on Monday.

“We could have wrestled a little better, but Marathon is a tough team,” Wolves coach Dave Pinckney said. “They've got a lot of good kids on their team and we hung with them for a little while.”

Not wrestling for the Olympians was defending state champ Devon Brown. Taking his place in the 130-pound weight class was Mikhail Brown, who pinned Wolves junior Mitch Lawler in 1:35 late in the meet.

Union Springs won one match that wasn't by forfeit when freshman Peter Klock dominated Marathon's Chester Hayes and pinned him in 1:43.

The match began with the 140-pound class, which Marathon's Kasey Bush won with a pinfall in 2:47 over Richie Thurston.

In other wins for Marathon, Kevin Fox (152) won by pinfall in 1:33 over Scott Wood and Dustin Mejean (215) pinned Tom Weir in 4:17, though Weir held a 5-0 lead after the first round of the match.

“Tom was doing real well in that one,” Pinckney said. “Sometimes, though, he has a couple of bad habits and they caught up to him tonight.”

Winning by forfeit for the Olympians was Dan Morehouse (160), Troy Reynolds (171), Josh Jenke (189) and Tyler Hall. For the Wolves, Andy Klock (135), Matt Pinckney (145) and Mike McDeid (112) also took forfeits. The 119 class was open.

Union Springs (1-15) looks to bounce back in Southern Cayuga, Wednesday. The two teams last faced each other in the Southern Cayuga Holiday Tournament on Dec. 15, where the home team came away with the win.

“It should be a decent match,” Pinckney said of his division rival. “They caught us by surprise at their tournament, but I expect us to do much better this time around.”
