Two Cents

All kinds off tractor trailers on Rockefeller Road in the town of Niles, hauling to the Auburn landfill, but no trucks with plows before 6 a.m. when people have to go to work. Unreal!
How does that guy in Syracuse get 13 years for killing the Chambers boy? It looks to me like we need some new judges rather than some new gun laws.

I think the committee to remodel the Auburn Schine Theater better hop to it because it looks as though the marquee could be falling down at any point in time.

Back in the 1990s, I was at a weekend shooting match in Cheyenne, Wyoming. When I was there, they had removed all the parking meters and the businesses started reopening.

We are allowed to pay exorbitant taxes but we are not allowed to protect ourselves, families and friends. New York's robbers, rapists and killers know this.

Now that "Two Cents" is only online, we can share our frustrations and critiques of our local environment with a worldwide audience. Local authorities can no longer just ignore your printed concerns because "Two Cents" has gone "Global," and now everyone knows.

Two Cents will be updated online as new submissions are called or e-mailed. To contribute new Two Cents items, call 253-5311 ext. 292 or e-mail twocents@lee.net.

" Nutrijwu -- you are right, but even worse is the many, many people who vote by personality. We all heard about the woman who asked Hilary Clinton "How do you do it?" and Hilary got all choked up about it. Then it turns out the woman who asked the question actually voted for Obama. I heard this woman interviewed and they asked her why she had switched -- and it was because Obama had moved her -- she couldn't even tell you what his positions are on the issues, but she voted for him because he brought her to tears during his talk -- Hilary "moved" her, but Obama "moved" her more, she said, and she just had to vote with her heart. So, whomever is the most convincing actor wins her vote, regardless of the candidates positions on any issue. And there are LOTS of people who vote that way -- it's scary. (It's how we get such bums in office). "

Nutrijwu wrote on Jan 10, 2008 8:30 AM:

" If you think New Hampshire is the state to move to, think again. They have the highest state property taxes in the nation. How do you think the state government is able to operate, having no other form of taxation? Their property taxes are three times higher than that of most other states in this region, and that goes without saying. My issue is people in the US not having a brain for themselves and using New Hampshire and Iowa as a platform for the way they're going to vote. That drives me batty. So instead of forming an educated decision, lets go ahead and base it on where these two state vote because their first on the primary list. Rediculous. "

" Ron Paul is the only guy who makes any sense in this election and it is too bad that nobody wants to listen to him...I guess the truth does hurt. Our Government is over spending on this war and printing new money which in turn devalues the dollar which in turn raises the prices of everything(GAS), this is exactly our problem..in order to solve all our problems,ie..health care...we need to fix our economy first. "

" Here's something new for Two Cents conversation:

Another CAFO (corporate agribusiness) near my house was recently awarded $1 Million of TAXPAYER MONEY to put a cover on their manure pond.

Think about that. They are using OUR money to put a band-aid patch on a mess made by a corporation in pursuit of their own profits.

Think about this: they put covers on the manure ponds because the fumes coming off them are toxic. What they don't mention is that they are still toxic when they are spreading them on the fields around our homes and schools, when we are breathing them when we are trying to enjoy our yards, or going for a walk, or blowing in the windows with a breeze in nice weather.

And that's in addition to the way they pollute the soil and water.

And instead of making the CAFOs be responsible for the waste produced by their own animals, they put the burden on the taxpayer who already suffers the ill effects of having these things in our communities. (I have a whole new study of the negative effects of corporate vs. family farming on the communities in which they are located, with data going back to the 40s, if anyone is that interested).

And, as if that weren't enough, by putting lids on their poop ponds with our money, they are earning those "points" you've heard about for industrial operations who take steps to lessen the damage they do to the environment -- and they trade points with some factory somewhere who then can just go ahead and NOT do anything about their polluting because they got points from this CAFO.

This is only one small example of why I think that doing something about corporate power over our lives is one of the most important issues most people ignore of our times.

Someone on CNN the other day said "Everyone knows you can't get anything done in Congress unless you have a corporate sponsor." Boy, isn't that the shameful and disgusting truth -- best Congress money can buy.

Keep an ear out for the candidate who is making an issue of not taking money from corporate sponsors -- he has less in his coffers, but his record is more clean. "

" I know how it is, Karl. Part of my job is providing access to online library resources for students and faculty from remote (ie. home or anywhere not on campus). I've mastered all kinds of really pretty high level tech stuff (I've done network architecture in a previous job, and net security in grad school), but I cannot make the ebrary reader for ebooks work from home on any browser. I understand the frustration of students -- because so much more of their research is dependent on those online resources.

Let's try a new paragraph and see what happens.

Anything that counts on cell phone-type communications is going to be a bust in Aurora too -- I've had friends go outside when I lived right on Main St and they still couldn't get reception, not even Verizon, which is supposed to have the best coverage. Aurora is down in a little bowl geographically. Weather often hops right over the Village -- I've even seen a hole in the clouds with sun in Aurora when it is cloudy and raining or snowing just a couple miles away all around. Happens all the time -- the place is like Brigadoon.

Yes, cm, I know. Wait until the kids get to be teenagers like mine -- then you'll have REAL fun with the crud they download onto your computer. And if you are on dial-up, you may find that they leave it online all night every night to download big files while everyone is asleep (and no one can reach you by phone).

I don't eat cookies any more (I cut out pretty much all junk food years ago, and I don't do chocolate in any event), but my favorite girl scout cookie was the one with caramel and coconut and stripes of chocolate.

Overall, Citizen, you are heading in the right direction to update your website, and you can tell everyone here appreciates your efforts to work out the bugs. But it still has that slow-to-load problem -- just too much overhead coming in with each page. Just take it as constructive criticism, not nastiness.

" I commend the Citizen on a job well done in changing the site layout. It looks awesome. I'm not sure if they're still considering suggestions but I'd like to throw one out there. When a user clicks any of the title bars at the top and all the stories within the category are listed, the number of user comments associated with each story should be listed beside the title. For example, if you go to the opinion page, you see the story titles and some have a camera beside them representing that it has a picture associated. Why couldn't they place the number of user comments there instead of the camera? Currently, the number of comments are shown at the top of the Citizens' Say section but at that point you already know how many are there because you can see them. "

" Farmer's Gal--don't feel so bad; you're not the only one. My girlfriend is starting her second semester in college on Monday and has been trying to get a high-speed connection out on Robinson Road in Throop, and Verizon and T.W. both want about $800.00 to bring it from the house next door (about 300 ft away)to hers. She can't get the hi-speed CLEARWIRE as her cell reception out there is spotty. Ridiculous! She can't even access some pf her class material from her house with the dial-up---but she still got a 4.0 last semester in pre-med! But man, what a pain it was to have to come to my house to study and complete certain assignments--not that I minded, but for her it was inconvenient at times. "

You should see the link to "Letters to the Editor" at the bottom of the "Navigation" block when viewing the opinion section, as well as at the bottom of the "Where to Next?" block while reading an article in the opinion section.

We had a problem with this link showing up sporadically, but I think it is fixed now.

" There's some guy offering wireless internet from across the lake, but it takes $200+ in installation fees (again, the landlord isn't going to let me put anything on his building) plus the monthly fees which are more than 4 times what I pay for dial-up. I wouldn;t mind double, or even triple, but when the fee is 4 times as much? Actually, I'd even pay that -- but this is even more. (I pay $7.95 a month for Thumpernet). Since I don't have a cell phone and my long distance via USADatanet seldom runs me $1 a month, I could swing $40 a month for high-speed internet -- but not $50 or $60, even if there were some way to get it without disturbing the property where I live. Honestly, I want DSL and it p*sses me off that Verizon won't bring it to rural areas. "

" Good point, justventing. I'll give it a try from home. And, of course, as soon as I had asked my question about Independents voting in the Primaries, I was at my fella's house and saw in CNN that some primaries are "open" (any registered voter can vote in any primary) or "closed" (only registered Democrats can vote in the Democratic primary and only registered Republicans can vote in the Republican primary. No matter how much education a person has, there are always gaps and more things to be learned.... "

brew1234 wrote on Jan 9, 2008 12:44 AM:

" New Hampshire state election laws let independents vote either Democrat or Republican and they don't have to decide until they get to the lines to vote. This is not the same in every state. Also there are two sides to the arguement of motorcycle helmets. Some say they cut down your vision and hearing and you would be safer without one but either way it should be your choice. "

brew1234 wrote on Jan 9, 2008 12:38 AM:

" The only bad thing about removing meters is the employees of the offices and businesses will park in front of the stores all day and you will never find a parking space. Then you have to hire a parking control person to regulate the length of time they are parking and that costs money and there is no income from the meters to pay this expense. "

" I thought if one were registered Independent, one couldn't vote in a primary -- is that only in NY State, or has that changed since last I paid attention? I used to be registered Independent, and that's closer to where my feelings lie, but I have also been registered as a Republican (can't now even remember exactly why, but it was to vote in some primary years ago) and am currently registered as a Democrat -- just to vote in primaries, not because I consider myself a Democrat (I consider Democrats and Republicans as Tweedle-Dee and Tweedle-Dum anyway). What's the scoop with registered Independents voting in a primary -- who's an expert here who can answer that question? TIA. "

Farmer's Gal wrote on Jan 8, 2008 7:02 PM:

" This new website takes over half a minute to load (on the second try -- first try stalled out without finishing after several minutes) from home over dial-up through my terrific local ISP (no DSL available out here in the boonies, I don't have TV much less cable (and don't want it), so that's not an option, and I rent and my landlord won't let me put a dish or such-like on his building). To me it is just poor design that takes up so much bandwidth that it excludes or handicaps those who can't get broadband for either financial or geographic reasons. I am getting re-oriented to the site, and I'm used to that sort of thing and it doesn't bother me. But there isn't much point even trying to access The Citizen from home any more -- I'll have to look only from work. It IS possible to design a fully-featured website without making it so bandwidth-heavy that your dial-up patrons can't use it -- but designers love their bells and whistles and often have disdain for anyone who isn't using the high-end stuff they have. Like the removal of Two Cents from the print version of the paper, this new design just furthers the Digital Divide between the haves and have-nots. P.S. I have to admire those NH folks too. "

nature lover wrote on Jan 8, 2008 1:55 PM:

The state has 1.2 million citizens and 750,000 will vote. They have no sales tax or state income tax. They have no adult seat belt law or motorcycle helmet law. They live by their state motto "Live free or die" They are not considered a democratic or republican state as 45% of voters are independents and they will vote either way. I admire the people of this state. And no I don't want to move there so spare me your wisecracks. "
