Saturday afternoon the bowling alley was overflowing with friends and family of 11-year-old Aaron Weed-Gagne for a surprise party on his behalf letting him know that his wish has come true.
Aaron has end stage renal disease and is on dialysis while he awaits a transplant.
Saturday afternoon, Sugarman Law Firm helped to make a wish come true for Aaron, announcing that he and his family, mom Lisa, dad, Luther, and sister, Andrea, 8, would be going on a trip to Disney World in Orlando, Fla., where they would get to visit Disney, Universal Studios and Sea World on an all-expenses-paid trip.
Sugarman Law Firm, which opened its doors in Auburn two years ago, has been working diligently over the past year with the Make A Wish Foundation to raise funds with the help of organizations like the Auburn Doubledays, where the firm held Make A Wish Wednesdays during the team's home games this past summer.
“We thought this would be a good way for us to give something back to the
community,” Steven Pesarchick, a partner at Sugarman, said. “The community has been very welcoming to us and we thought this would be something we could do to give something back.”
State Sen. Michael Nozzolio presented the young boy with a certificate proclaiming Saturday “Aaron Weed-Gagne Day,“ also gave Aaron another gift, a picture of the state flag.
“This is a flag of the great state of New York,” Nozzolio said. “On the flag is the word excelsior, that means forever forward. I want you to know that we are all behind you as you move forever forward into your future.”
Norman Lee, a former Make A Wish board member and wish granter helped make the day possible, talking with Aaron and his family to find out what Aaron likes best.
The lanes were filled with balloons, in Aaron's favorite colors - red and black - and many of his favorite
food were also on hand.
“I talked with him to see what he likes,” Lee said. “He said Denny's was his favorite place to eat and that he really liked Astrodogs. I'm really happy we were able to help make this happen.”
Despite the fact that there was so much going on and so many people involved, Aaron had no idea. Until he walked through the door, he had thought he was going to a surprise party for an uncle.
“It wasn't too hard to keep it a secret,” Lisa said. “In the last few days we got a lot of calls, but still it was a secret from him. We didn't even know it was going to be anything like this. It is really nice to see that so many people care.”
Along with Starlite donating the lanes and Denny's proving some of the food, other local businesses like Bass Pro Shops donated gifts and Abner from the Doubeldays was also on hand.
“The support we have received from everyone in the community has been wonderful,” Pesarchick said. “This really is a community effort and it shows what a community can do when it works together and I would like to thank everyone that helped to make this possible.”
Armed with a bucket full of quarters, Aaron was eager to hit the video games and the lanes, but was none the less amazed by all that was happening around him.
“I feel really happy,” Aaron said. “I was surprised. It feels really good. I love bowling and playing video games and I really like all the stuff I got, all of this makes me feel really good.”
