Museum gets grant for carriage house
The Cayuga Museum was awarded a $49,550 Environmental Protection Fund matching grant in November to renovate the carriage house behind the museum.

It plans to use the ground floor as a 120-seat community theater and restore the second floor to replicate the experimental sound production studio of Theodore Case.

The grant money will first be used to restore the outside of the building as well as the stairs to the sound studio.

Corrections officer exams begin in April

A statewide competitive civil service exam for the position of correction officer trainee will be given April 12.

Test announcements and application will be distributed to different locations and include the Department of Civil Service Web site www.cs.state.ny.us.

Announcements and applications can be obtained by contacting Correctional Services at (518) 457-8131, visiting www.docs.state.ny.us, or writing NYSDOCS, Correction Officer Recruitment Unit, Building 2, the Harriman State Campus, 1220 Washington Ave., Albany, NY 12226.

Applications must be postmarked by Monday, Feb. 25.

At the time of appointment, an applicant must pass a written exam, be 21 or older, be a U.S. citizen, live in New York, possess a high school diploma or GED. Appointees must pass medical and psychological screenings, and background investigations. Felony convictions disqualify people from becoming corrections officers.

NAACP Millennium Luncheon to be held

The Auburn/Cayuga Branch NAACP Millennium Luncheon will be held from noon to 1:30 p.m. Tuesday, Jan. 15, at the Auburn Holiday Inn.

The celebration, in memory of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., will honor the 2008 Millennium Award Recipients: Steven Crosby, Merritt F. Fletcher, Carolyn Hirst-Loucks, Dr. Cathy Leogrande and Leslie Walker.

Reservations must be made by Tuesday, Jan. 8, by calling, Florence Smith at 253-6094 or e-mailing her at flomarith@webtv.net. The luncheon is $20 per person.

Amateur Chef's Night coming up

More than 60 local amateur chefs will show their skills Feb. 7 at the 10th annual Amateur Chef's Night. The event, sponsored by the Community Preservation Committee, will start at 6:15 p.m. and take place in the Sacred Heart Parish Hall, Melrose Road, Auburn.

Carey Eidel of the Auburn Public Theater will serve as the evening's emcee. Tickets are $40 each. Proceeds go to Willard Chapel.
