ALBANY- The New York Board of Elections has given a federal judge a timetable to replace the state's old-fashioned lever action voting machines with more modern machines and increase the number accessible to the disabled by September 2009.
The changes are required by the federal Help America Vote Act enacted after the disputed 2000 presidential election. The U.S. Justice Department sued New York in March 2006 because it was the only state that still hadn't complied.
Last month, the state elections board submitted two plans to the judge, who rebuked board members and ordered them to produce a single plan with specific deadlines for each step the state will take to comply with the law.
