Even shutting out its opponent in the fourth quarter wasn't enough to give the Skaneateles girls basketball team a win.
Against league rival Cazenovia in the battle of the Lakers on Friday, Skaneateles couldn't overcome a 17-1 first quarter deficit and lost 40-24.
“After the first quarter, we settled down and played better defensively,” Skaneateles coach Bob Braunitzer said. “ We did a few things well, but we had way too many turnovers.”
Skaneateles gave the ball away over 10 times in the first quarter alone, resulting in the early hole. Without leading scorer Caryn Crary, who was out of the game with an illness, Skaneateles fell behind 26-7 at the half.
“To our credit, the girls fought back,” Braunitzer said. “They never got discouraged and just kept playing.”
Offensively, Brittany Lavaute led with 10 points, while Alexis Jones and Emily Ross each had five and Staci Dudden tallied four.
Jones also contributed seven boards and two steals.
Skaneateles (6-5 overall, 2-4 league) hosts Hannibal on Tuesday.
