SKANEATELES - For the past several years, Reflections, Dr. Jeffrey LaDuca's medical and cosmetic dermatology office, has served the needs of the Skaneateles community.
Those needs are still being served, albeit in a different location. LaDuca, of Auburn, recently moved his Skaneateles office a short trip up the road to allow for the expansion of skin-care services. Reflections is now located at 833 W. Genesee St.
“I was very happy to get this space,” LaDuca said. “It is bigger and better. We can do a lot more. We can do both the cosmetic procedures and the medical ones as well. Before, our space was just too small.”
After completing his M.D. at State University of New York Health Science Center at Syracuse in 1998, LaDuca opened Finger Lakes Dermatology in Auburn.
But after having that practice open for several years, he wanted to expand and saw Skaneateles as the perfect place to provide him that opportunity. He subsequently opened his first Skaneateles office in April of 2005 in the Packwood House on West Genesee Street downtown.
“I thought it would be nice to expand over here,” LaDuca said. “For people that are coming from, say, Camillus, if it is a choice between Auburn and Syracuse, they are more likely to go to Syracuse. But if it is a choice between Syracuse and Skaneateles, a lot of people are going to come here.”
LaDuca said that from the beginning, his practice was well received by not only the Skaneateles community, but also surrounding areas. Moving into Skaneateles also offered LaDuca the opportunity to become a member of both the Onondaga and Cayuga county medical societies, a distinction that goes along with his board certification in dermatology.
Yet after almost three years, LaDuca found that his office in the Packwood House was too small to accommodate the procedures and care that he wanted to be able to offer his patients.
In July of this year, he opened a new office a little up the road and slightly off the beaten path at 833 W. Genesee St., right behind Arabella salon.
It was in many ways an ironic move for a dermatologist to make. “This used to be a tanning salon,” LaDuca said of his new location. “It is sort of funny that we've moved in here. As a dermatologist, I don't like tanning, so I see it as kind of a moral victory that we are here now.”
The move came in conjunction with a partnership with Tammy Moore, owner of Arabella. Moore said that LaDuca and herself are real estate partners.
She has also been bringing her knowledge of skin care to the Reflections office once a week.
“I work there on Mondays,” Moore said. “I help with the cosmetic end of things. I think it has worked out well and been beneficial for both of us.”
The larger space of the new office has allowed LaDuca to stretch out. Along with treatments like Botox, laser hair removal and microdermabrasion, LaDuca has been able to explore other aspects of skin care.
Massage therapy, a skin-care boutique and an operating room that allows LaDuca to perform medical procedures such as biopsies have proven to be very well received.
LaDuca said that while there may be an obvious focus on the cosmetic side of what he does, he never shuts off the medical part.
“That is one of the advantages to being here ... and working with Tammy,” he said. “We can be a comprehensive service. There is a high level of expertise here. People may come in for a cosmetic procedure, but there is also the medical aspect. It is nice to help people look good, but that only goes so far if you don't recognize the skin cancer.”
In many ways, with Arabella and Reflections being so close together, it has become a one-stop shop for the skin-care needs of a community. Looking toward the spring and summer, Moore said there are some tentative plans in the works to expand on what she and LaDuca can offer.
“I think we really complement each other,” Moore said, noting that the two have started planning wedding packages.
And though his office may be tucked away, that has not inhibited LaDuca's business any. With plans to move his Auburn practice to a larger location in 2008, LaDuca is pleased with the way his Skaneateles office has continued to grow and develop.
“I like the space we are in,” LaDuca said. “We have been adding to what we can do and to our clients (list), and I think everyone has been pleased with this.”
