Maroons shatter five pool records in win over Rome

Records are meant to be broken.
But five in one night?

The Auburn boys swimming team cracked five pool records in an 88-64 win over Rome on Thursday.

In the 200 medley relay, one of the five pool records was broken as Pat O' Donovan, Lucas Zelehowsky, Preston Chaffee and Sean McNamara (1:34.30) took first place.

Lucas Zelehowsky also ended up breaking the 200 IM pool record with a first-place finish (2:03.97). Zelehowsky almost broke the 100 butterfly mark as he took first with a time of 55.71, just .2 seconds behind the school mark.

The next three pool records would be the 200 free relay led by O' Donovan, Adam Zelehowsky, Chaffee and McNamara (1:34.25). O' Donovan set a new 100 backstroke record of (53.78) and in the 400 free relay, McNamara, Lucas Zelehowsky, Chaffee and O' Donovan set the fifth and final pool record (3:28.12).

John Tehan took first in the 200 freestyle (2:01.54) and in the 100 breaststroke (1:15.02).

In the 50 freestyle, Sean McNamara finished first (22.75)and missed another school record by .55 seconds.

Connor Kilmer came in first in the 100 freestyle (55.88) and in the 500 freestyle Greg Rifanburg sealed first place (6:13.95).

Auburn hosts Cicero-North Syracuse Friday.

VOLLEYBALL

Skaneateles 3, Westhill 1

Captain Krissy Ryan led the way for the Lakers with 14 kills and nine blocks as they won by scores of 25-14, 24-26, 25-20 and 25-20.

Emily Wood finished with 13 kills and Katherine Hill contributed with eight kills. Chloe Warner had 29 assists and Ryan Merle added eight kills and four assists.

“Ryan played just an awesome game tonight.” Lakers coach Doreen Doctor said.

Skaneateles (6-3) travels to Carthage Saturday.

Cato-Meridian 3, Bishop Grimes 0

The Blue Devils' Danielle Halstead led the way with two aces, three assists, two kills and one dig as they won by scores of 25-14, 25-8 and 25-12.

Shelby Klaben helped out with three aces, four kills and one dig. Becca Teska had one kill and two digs. Captains Megan Post (one ace) and Nicole Champion (one ace, six kills) also played well.

Becca Myers had four aces and three assists. Vicky Davis had two aces and three assists. Arielle Williams had one ace and Janea Parsons had two assists.

Cato-Meridian (2-4) hosts Hannibal Saturday.

Solvay 3, Jordan-Elbridge 0

Emily Longeretta led the Eagles with nine assists, one ace and one kill. Lisa Kimak had five kills and two blocks.

Alicia Andrianos finished with three kills, two aces and one block and Carey Harvey had three assists and one kill.

Jordan-Elbridge hosts Westhill Saturday.

WRESTLING

Groton 42, Southern Cayuga 31

Ryan Barta (152 pounds) pinned Groton's Eric McCaughlin in the first period in a time of 1:00.

Jeremy Marsh (160) pinned Matt Hinman. Louis Quill defeated Terrell Williams by a score of 19-7.

Ben Bower (135) defeated Justin Mortner by an injury default. Griffen Falrow (140) beat Cody Hillsinger 7-3.

Also winning for Southern Cayuga was Zach Littlejohn (215) by forfeit.

“I thought we did very well by winning five of seven matches.” Southern Cayuga coach Aaron Brozon said. “We have a small team so we give up a lot of forfeits, but overall I'm very happy with our performance tonight.”

Southern Cayuga (2-15) travels to participate in the Deposit-Hancock Tournament Saturday.

Candor 42, Union Springs 24

In one of the most hard-fought matches of the season for the Wolves, Andy Klock came out on top in a triple overtime. With the score tied 1-1, Klock was able to pick up the win by not allowing Candor's Joey Ciappa to score a point in the overtime period.

Mitch Lawler (130) defeated Andy Roberts by a score of 12-5. Matt Pinckney (140) pinned Seth Stadingener in a time of 3:10. Also picking up wins for the Wolves was Rich Thurston (145) and Scott Wood (152).

Union Springs (1-14) travels to Port Byron Saturday.

GIRLS BASKETBALL

Onondaga 47, Weedsport 40

Markie Kreplin led the way for the Warriors with 14 points, five rebounds and three blocks.

Kaitlin Hammersley scored seven points, had five rebounds and three assists. Allison Beardsley and Margaret Roberts also scored seven points each. Allison Roosa had three points and Taylor Roe finished with two.

Weedsport (6-4, 4-2 league) hosts Cato-Meridian Thursday.
