Two Cents

Friday, January 4, 2008 1:14 PM EST

Why do I bother to neatly separate my recycled cardboard from the trash if it all goes in the same garbage truck?
I just want to say I'm going to miss the Two Cents in the paper. There are people that don't have a computer and others who couldn't work it if there's one in the house, and we've learned to enjoy it very much.

Hey, Red Sox Nation, I bet it sticks in your craw that you can no longer spout your ignorant commentary in the paper.

If you want out of the war, then vote for Dr. Ron Paul. If you want to stay in the war, vote for anyone else.

For the person whose dog was run over, I would like to notify her I was heading on the road that is a high speed road at 55 mph and on Christmas Eve the dog ran out in front of me. If you let your dog run into the road, chances are it's going to get hit.

" Brew1234, I am not being a fool about recycling. I am all for it and I wish that everyone did it. However, I am being told by numerous people that I do it all for no reason. I do see separate trucks come and pick up the trash and the recyclables however, I am told they are all combined once they get to the landfill. All the extra steps of breaking down the cardboard and rinsing everything out and making sure the plastic has the right number on the bottom... are all those efforts being done in vain? Am I really doing it all for nothing? I hope that even though I am one person, my recyclables are really being recycled and I am doing my small part to help the environment. Like I said before, the truth... the REAL truth has to be out there somewhere. "

I lived in Auburn for 35 years and if I choose to care about my hometown then what is your problem? I have lived in many places and sometimes that experience helps your perspective. I have seen towns poorly run and others that seem to do it right. I am a student of life and learn new things every day and I don't hesitate imparting my knowledge when I feel it would be useful. "

" I like a politician who can "reach across the aisle," as Andy B recently put it, but I also want one who will NOT be in the pocket or even beholden to corporate interests. I realize this makes it hard for the candidate to raise enough money and also may make it a tough time in office, but we've seen way too many years of pandering to corporate power and the seriously negative effects that has had on our lives. Yes, it would/will be a rough road, but it is way long overdue that we take it and get out from under that moneyed minority's thumb. We need a government by the people and for the people, not for the corporations and PAC interests over our own. And I am all for balancing the budget -- start by ceasing to waste obscene amounts on an unwinnable war, then move to a place where we take care of our own people first and only send foreign aid if we have it to spare, and even then we send it for humanitarian purposes first and not for buying political favor abroad. This approach is totally not business as usual and would undoubtedly cause a huge upheaval - and we need it. Business as usual is running decent, hard-working middle class folks into the ground and isn't really helping the poor either -- it just feeds even more of the pie to those who already have their bucket of money, particularly corporate interests who are despoiling our resources and our lives. OK, enough polemics -- Redskins play at 4:15 and I need to get over to a house with TV to see it (I'm a Giants fan, and hope to see them win their first playoff game in years, but I am also realistic enough to know they aren't Superbowl quality yet -- I like the Redskins, the Packers and the Colts for that, and don't care for the Pats or Cowboys -- so sue me). "

DD--I hear what you're saying; to tell you the truth I'm kinda leaning toward Obama myself. I thin he's enough of a "Washington outsider" to put an end to all the divisiveness in Capitol Hill. I know what we can do about it--how about a Karl L/DD ticket for 2012? We can start our campaign right here. I might be able to even get us one of those fire trucks to ride around in one the parades?! LOL! C'mon people--call in your "two cents" comments! Even you Mr COULTER! "

Us FOOLS as you put it, do have concerns about some local issues, ie: trash. We understand the whole concept of how the financial portion works but if you lived RIGHT here you would wonder about alot of things because MUCH is done behind closed doors. Probably by individuals such as yourself that think Regular Joe Auburn either doesnt have the sense to have a rational opinion or we are just cattle needing decisions to be made for us. I feel that is why the published version of the Two Cents was eliminated also. Rather than try a different approach as I suggested making us post w/our reals names and continue to publish. Decisions were made without the publics input like SO many other things here. Dont you have idiodic concerns Brew1234 where you live or are you in Utopia? "

" 1. Karl, did you see that clip of Huckabee playing electric guitar? (I'm not a musician myself, but I think it was a bass). How's that for odd-seeming? Politicians will do anything to market themselves based on what their handlers tell them people want. 2. Yes, DD, just like Hilary changes her views so constantly that one is never sure just what her position is. Wolf Blitzer on CNN asked Edwards the other day how he (Edwards) would compare his position on the war to that of Clinton and Obama -- and he said he couldn't say for sure because Clinton's position wasn't clear, she was always changing it -- and he's right. I was glad to hear him speak a bit more firmly against it. 3. RWT -- I posted a very innocuous comment on that story -- and it disappeared too. Very strange. 4. I think The Citizen has been about as clear about Two Cents as Hilary has been about her position on the war. Supposedly they are just eliminating it from the print paper, but then we saw no updates to the column for 2-3 days, and then we got this bunch of recycled comments from the past posted yesterday, and we are seeing weird deletions from non-Two-Cents comments space below articles. I don't know enough about Auburn politics to judge whether Karl has a valid point about pressure from local politicians or not, but something is very screwy with Two Cents -- which is stupid handling by The Citizen since it is such a popular feature. "

" Karl, can you explain to me again? ha ha For the record, I don't want someone who is overly religious running the country either. I want someone who has an agenda to run the country as if it were a business. Most good CEO's don't run their companies at a deficit, allow their underlings to steal, lie, or misrepresent the facts to shareholders. The CEO protects the shareholders from the details that get in the way of the big picture.I am not sure if there is even one candidate--Republican or Democrat that fits the bill in my opinion. Not one of them has the experience necesasary to bring both parties together for the better good of our country. What the heck are we gonna do? "

" If your garbage removal people don't have separate trucks for recycling then they do the sorting at a transfer station. They don't make a profit on your recyclables it just reduces the expense of the entire garbage collection program. You are charged per ton for garbage removal and reducing that tonnage reduces cost. And if you think you get free garbage removal because the city owns a landfill then think again. There are many items that can't be dumped in the landfill and they have to be removed. Also at some point your landfill must close and the cost will be millions of dollars. If you don't separate and handle your recyclables properly the collectors should leave it where it sits. If you don't correct it, you should be cited for a health code violation. Why do you fools make the recycling of trash such a big deal? It's easy and has to be done from an economical and environmental aspect. "

" DD, read the post immediately below your last one for an explanation of your previous question. Haven't you been paying attention young man? Didn't you read all that that I wrote about the reasons when I had the letter about the Serenity Prayer? It's not about a "religious guy" winning--all the candidates claim to be religious; you couldn't even get on the ticket if you didn't express some belief in God (and that's sad)--it's about the WAY that Huckleberrry won. By positing himself as the "Christian candidate". By pandering to the Christian vote and subtly-but-unmistakably disparaging Romney's Mormonism. By really making his religion the #1 reason to vote for him. That's a de facto "religious test". THAT is SPECIFICALLY FORBIDDEN by the Constitution, with good reason. Please don't make me explain why again! :) "

" I think that its funny how Hillary was quoted as saying that "young America" could not deliver an election. Now that it is being shown that they can, she is tailoring her run towards them. (just like most politicians would) she has a habit of changing her stances like most people change their socks. I think she was shocked by the results of the latest caucus. I think that after a few failures, she will realize that most people see through her fake front, and right through that she is an opportunistic beeeeotch, that will fade into the sunset. Now, why all the alarm because a religious man won this week? "

karl L wrote on Jan 4, 2008 4:34 PM:

" What's scary to me is that we have now gone so clearly over the edge of the "Religious test" forbidden by the Constitution. It is plainly evident that Huckabee made his Religion the #1 issue as far as his electability; on most of the other major issues his positions are almost unknown! So the FEC's who voted for him did so mostly because of his religious pandering! You know, Farmer's Gal, if you look at the polls and stories about what other appeal Huckabee allegedly has, it's almost the same as Bush's in the last two elections--that Religious-talkin, "simple-man" likability, you know, the guy who wears an "aw shucks"-type demeanor and can jabber with the "common folk"--GREAT for a preacher, but when are the FEC's going to start voting in COMPETENT people instead of people they think they can confess to? It really make me sick--the inmates are taking charge of the asylum, and I can't understand why nobody is pulling an alarm? "

But people who run their lives based on faith, and that God will bail you out if you get into trouble (not all Christians are like that, but there are some who ARE, to a scary degree) -- the idea of someone like that running the country is very frightening -- people who believe on faith that they are Right because they have God on their side -- brrrr! Number two would be a few "connected" friends of the paper who managed to sway somebody there; another PC policeman. You know, to me, the nature of the blobs is fairly brutal--I'm on another one--and it's just naive to think it's going to be dinner-table polite conversation. It an outlet, and it's for adults.
