Homegrown art

Evelyn Schillawski Dankovich's art celebrates the Finger Lakes, and the Skaneateles Artisans allows people to celebrate the variety of art created in the region.
The Skaneateles Artisans offers a reception the first Friday of each month as an opportunity to have people meet and greet artists. This month, Dankovich and Amy Lee's work will be on display at the Fennell Street building that used to house the Old Stone Mill Restaurant.

While each of their pieces have a place year-round in the store, two or three artists are featured monthly with a prominent spot in the store and more room for their work.

Dankovich will display pieces that are too large to transport frequently, including 2-by-3 and 3-by-4 paintings.

She paints the landscapes of the Finger Lakes and the Adirondacks using watercolors, acrylics and oil paints. A graduate of the Auburn school district, Dankovich is familiar with the scenery.

Lee is a mosaic artist who crafts her art with small, strategically placed titles. She also creates pottery and ceramics.

During the meet-and-greet receptions the first Friday each month, Skaneateles Artisans stays open longer and offers music and refreshments. The Skaneateles Artisans initiated the open house series last summer. The event is evolving, with more businesses joining.

Dankovich realizes it doesn't happen overnight, but she looks forward to seeing it grow further.

“It's a work in progress,” she said. “We can't predict where it's heading. It's up to the people who participate.”

The receptions provide opportunities for the artists to talk about their works and styles, and also answer questions. The events also offer residents an excuse to peruse the store and its wares.

Dankovich has served as president since the start of the Artisans.

“This is an important organization because we're providing ... goods that are locally made by artisans. They are not made by China. All are original art. It's unique that way,” Dankovich said. “You've got a collection of 35 artists, many who - if they paint - are painting the Finger Lakes.”

She added that a lot of the artists are from the area and live within 45 miles from the store.

“The key is everything is locally made and locally created. They aren't imported from somewhere else,” Dankovich said.

The open houses are a great way to make the community aware of the organization, as well as its 35 artists. The plan is to feature two to three artists each month so that all artists are featured throughout the year.

Dankovich feels “it's wonderful to have something come alive on Friday nights.”
