Two Cents

This is to the Red Sox fan that must be a convert, who probably jumped on the bandwagon when they won the World Series. A true fan would know that we obtained Eric Gagne on July 31, 2007 and he was still on the roster until he waived arbitration and signed with the Brewers in December.
Thank you Mayor Tim Lattimore for your love and interest in the lives of our city while in office. We all know that not just one person can do everything but you gave your all.

If you want out of the war, then vote for Dr. Ron Paul. If you want to stay in the war, vote for anyone else.

Please let's not bring the Marine Corps into the Lt. Langler's problem that he caused for himself. This is the United States of America, so you should be able to vote for whoever you want, not forced to vote.

For the person whose dog was run over, I would like to notify her I was heading on the road that is a high speed road at 55 mph and on Christmas Eve the dog ran out in front of me. If you let your dog run into the road, chances are it's going to get hit.

" There are people who don't have a child, wife or parents in their lives -- for many of these folks, the pet IS their family, and it hits them just as hard as if one of us who do have family were to lose a beloved person in our lives. There are people who have been so abused by other people that an animal friend is more trusted and safer (they use dogs for therapy for abused children, for example) -- to that abused person, losing a pet is worse than losing another person. You just have to try to see the world through the eyes of someone whose life is not just like your own. "

" Us too, naturelover -- we let a few of the cats at the farm stay in the house overnight because it was only 3 degrees when we got up at 4 AM (as we always do on the farm). The rest of the kitties in the barn have a thick layer of straw and hay, but their water freezes fast and has to be refreshed a couple times a day. These cats have it better than those living rough in the city. In Ithaca, they have a charitable organization who cares for feral cats and rehabs as many as they can -- I say one of their flyers recently that the colony on Rte 13 is down from over 30 cats to only 3, and they have a few kittens in their shelter awaiting new homes. Karl is right that feral cats are a problem -- for themselves and others, they need to be trapped and fixed so they don't keep breeding, but so many people just dump cats that the people caused the problem, and it will take people (human intervention) to solve it. We do our part, fixing the kitties who live in our barn as we can, keeping their numbers down, and giving them food, water, shelter and medical care when needed, but it is getting costly with about 11-12 of them out there, plus the 4 cats (and elderly rabbit) at my house (2 indoor-only). Time for others to step up to care for feral cats in Auburn -- I know there are some groups, but they haven't been able to be as efficient yet as the Ithaca group apparently is. Send 'em a donation and point them in the direction of the colony near your house, Karl -- maybe they can do something the neighbors won't? (Depends if the cats are really feral, or if they are pets who are not cared for -- in which case, good luck getting the dog warden out to deal with it -- he doesn't even make it out to take care of the dog calls). "

I would feel terrible if he died but I would recover much more quickly that I would in the aforementioned loss. If my philosophy disagrees with yours I am sorry. "

" cm, sorry, I just saw your post about me and the cat comment. I can't hide my bias here; I'm a confirmed "dog person", but more than that, where I live there are stray and domesticated cats EVERYWHERE, running around all over the streets, fighting in the yards, reproducing at will--and I HAVE gone directly to the owners of one particular house and asked them to keep their cats inside, and to no avail. You can drive around Auburn on any given day and it seems like you'll see any number of cats outdoors unattended by human companions; on the contrary, it's rare that I see unattended dogs where I live, but I'm willing to admit that perhaps the cats have a racket that keeps the dogs away! " It was wrong for the person who hit the dog (especially since they apparently KNEW they hit a dog) to not at least report it to the police. However the owner of the dog is responsible for letting it get out. If you are not going to properly secure your pet you shouldn't be surprised that it got hit by a car. "

Farmer's Gal wrote on Jan 3, 2008 8:36 AM:

" "brew1234," you are mistaken. Many people live alone with only a pet for a companion, and the loss of that pet is just has heart-rending for them as a human, sometimes even more so. There's nothing psychologically wrong with them -- in the context of their lives, they have a closer relation with their pet. There is no corner of the market by humans for loving familial relations. "cm" pretty much summed up my view -- take care of your pets and your kids, but accidents can happen -- whether pet, child or elderly relative whose mind is slipping, no one can be 100% diligent 100% of the time and more than a driver can be 100% diligent 100% of the time. The other day, I was driving along my road, and at the last second, a squirrel ran out right under my wheels. There wasn't a thing I could do about it but look back and make sure it was dead and not suffering in the road dying. Is someone "to blame" for that? No, for goodness sake, it was an accident. If it had been someone's pet, I would have been even more mortified and yes, I would have gone back, checked even more closely, and looked for the owners so they could get their pet from the road before someone else came along and ran it over into mush. "Cheeko" -- what's a "comfound" -- lost me on that one. As "smarterthana5thgrader" and "brew1234" wrote, yes, "me," it is a crime to hit an animal on the road and not stop. Almost no one follows this law, but it is on the books. "stevedallas" -- I didn't say anything about kids -- before your post -- how come the lashing out at me? Gosh, we are all so obsessed with blame and fault. Accidents happen -- it's how we behave afterwards when a true accident does happen that matters -- some have more compassion than others, and some are just plain jerks. "

" Karl, take your false accusations and place them where your stinky comes from. And if I did kill that dog, i would have no problem calling the cops, especially if my vehicle was damaged. See, if my car was damaged in this way, I would be suing the idiot that allowed their animal, child, or grandma to run around unsupervised! "

brew1234 wrote on Jan 3, 2008 1:06 AM:

" Can someone put into perspective that pets are animals not humans? There are other important topics to deal with than animals in this world. You feel grief at the loss of a pet but it is not the grief you feel at the loss of a human family member. If you don't agree then you need therapy.
Also leaving the scene of an accident is charged if you leave a domestic pet hurt or dead without notifying the owner or the police. You also receive 3 points charged to your driving record and possibly a fine. This is NYS vehicle code. "

" It is not ALWAYS the owner's fault if an animal gets loose. And fences don't do much help...look at numerous accounts of farm animals getting hit by cars because they wandered out of their fenced in area.
It probably was an accident that the dog was hit, but that does not mean that individual had to be so negative and cruel towards the owners of the dog. It is bad enough that they have to grieve for the loss of their pet, then come on here and have it rubbed in their face that the dog was loose and ran out in the road. Heartless, heartless citizens I tell ya!!! "

" People will often push the blame angrily onto others when they themselves feel guilty but can't face it -- which is what this sounds like. If it's the dog from the bit posted the other day, it was just a puppy -- so, a puppy gets loose, isn't world-wise enough yet to stay out of the road, person driving along accidentally hits the dog -- a sad tragedy for the family on Christmas Eve. Probably no one is to blame per se, but each party is upset and lashes out at the other. The right thing for the driver to have done is to stop and check on the dog -- look around and see if any obvious owners are visible, apologize, share some sympathy, or at least report the accident if the driver weren't comfortable knocking on doors in the neighborhood. Sad all around, and the driver's attempt to angrily push blame on the family just makes it worse. Been a bad season for pets -- my mom lost her sole companion cat (got into poison at my elderly grandma's house while visiting), my good friend, who is mostly housebound, lost his companion cat to cancer, my ex lost an indoor-only cat when an elderly visitor opened the door without knowing and cm lost a dear dog to old age. My sympathy goes out to you all. "
