Birthday party Jan. 6 for Millard Fillmore
The Cayuga-Owasco Lake Historical Society will hold a birthday celebration for Millard Fillmore's 208th birthday from 2 to 4 p.m. Sunday, Jan. 6, at the History House, 14 W. Cayuga St., Moravia.

The public is invited to join COLHS for birthday cake, punch and tours of the History House. There will be birthday balloons for children in attendance, and visitors can take the Millard Fillmore Birthday Quiz to win Fillmore memorabilia.

Clinic offered for bonsai tree owners

A free clinic for anyone who received a bonsai tree as a gift will be offered at 7 p.m. Wednesday, Jan. 9, at Pitcher Hill Community Church in Syracuse. Experienced Bonsai Club members will show guests how to care and style one's new bonsai plant. Tropical bonsai plants can be carried in a picnic cooler.

This clinic is sponsored by the Bonsai Club of Central New York.

Schweinfurth seeks artwork by seniors

The Schweinfurth Memorial Art Center, 205 Genesee St., Auburn, is seeking artwork by Cayuga County senior citizens for the annual “Both Ends of the Rainbow” exhibit.

“Both Ends of the Rainbow” will be on view Jan. 26 through Feb. 24.

All senior citizens in Cayuga County are invited to submit up to two works of art that are framed and ready to hang for inclusion in this year's show. Entry is free. Works must be two-dimensional and may include watercolor, painting, drawing, photography, among other media.

Artwork must be delivered to the art center from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Friday. The last day to submit is Jan. 11. The Art Center will be closed on New Year's Day.

Flower and garden show dates set

The CNY Blooms Committee has announced the 2008 CNY Blooms Flower & Garden Show will be held Feb. 27 to March 2, 2008, at the Convention Center at the Oncenter in Syracuse.

In addition to exhibits, the show will include educational seminars and a keynote address by nationally known gardening expert, Melinda Myers.

The show will begin with an advance sale preview party from 7 to 10 p.m. Feb. 27, sponsored by the Central New York Nursery and Landscape Association and Germain and Germain Law Firm.

Library system honors Austin

Cheryl Austin, the director of Weedsport Free Library, was named as the 2007 Finger Lakes Library System director of the year. The award is presented at the group's annual meeting held each October.

Nominations for the awards are submitted and then the system board of directors makes the final decision. The 49th annual meeting was held in Owego Oct. 10, 2007, where Karen Creenan, executive director of FLLS presented Austin with an engraved plaque for Director of the Year.
