WEEDSPORT — After a day-long search, authorities have still not located a Weedsport man who has been missing for almost a week.
The Cayuga County Sheriff’s office, with assistance from numerous other agencies, searched from 10 a.m. to dusk Friday for James T. George, 39, of 2661 Lincoln St. About 30 people, three K-9 units and a New York State Police helicopter scanned an area between Weedsport and Port Byron, but did not find George or any clues to his whereabouts.
The search focused mainly on wooded areas George’s family members said he frequented, according to sheriff’s officials.
“We exhausted every area that we know him to be familiar with,” said detective Lt. Joseph Weeks, who added that one K-9 unit will search a stretch of state Route 31 today. “If (Saturday’s effort) does not provide any results, that will be the end of the search.”
Sheriff’s officials will continue to investigate leads and reported sightings, Weeks said.
According to authorities, family members said George left his residence on foot in a despondent state of mind at about 2:30 p.m. Dec. 23. He was wearing a black fleece jacket, blue jeans or sweat pants and hiking boots at the time, according to the sheriff’s office.
He has also been known to suffer from depression, said Sheriff David Gould.
“You never know where you might find him with a case like this,” Gould said. “Hopefully, he is safe and well somewhere, and he doesn’t even know we are searching for him.”
Officials from the Weedsport Police and Fire Departments, Highland Search and Rescue, Oswego County Search and Rescue and the Cayuga County Emergency Management Office, as well as federal forest rangers and state environmental conservation police participated in the effort.
The sheriff’s office asks anyone with information about George’s whereabouts to call 253-1222.
