The Auburn Public Theater will celebrate the holidays by hosting a Big Band Holiday Jazz Session and a New Year’s Eve celebration this extended weekend.
Peter Maciulewicz, local Auburnian and bass player, will organize a jam work session to include almost 20 top quality acts from New York City. For a charge of $15, people can come and go all day to listen to big band jazz.
Hot Tuna is among the top quality jazz groups that will come here to play. Rock and roll Hall of Famers Jorma Kaukonen and Jack Casady have been perfoming together for more than 45 years. Kaukonen co-founded Jefferson Airplane and both Kaukonen and Casady founded Hot Tuna. Their music is a mix of rock, blues, folk, and country.
“Mack” is donating all proceeds to the Auburn Public Theater to fund future productions.
“We’re thrilled to have his expertise,” Carey Eidel, APT co-founder, said.
Musicians will jam again on Monday night, as they typically do every Tuesday night at the theater. All performers are local musicians who usually come and play for no charge with 70 or 80 people attending.
There will be a $5 charge for pizza and wings. Eidel said they like to pay the artists something.
The atmosphere is casual so that people feel comfortable coming to enjoy the music.
Those playing New Year’s Eve include: John Reilly, who performs vocals, plays guitar and saxophone in his band. The John Reilly Band plays a wide variety of music: rock, country, swing, Americana, and a good mix of both covers and originals.
At 9 p.m. the band Teenager performs original rock music with punk, psychedelic and alt-country. Lead guitarist Donny Alger, rhythm guitarist Teddy Curry and bassist Taylor Price are joined by Beth Beer on drums and Theresa Walsh on keyboards, accordion and concertina. The group’s first CD, “Entitled” came out on Dec. 21.
Other local musicians playing on New Year’s Eve include Erin Brown, singer and guitarist; Bob Brower, guitarist; folk singer Donna Dennihy, who also plays acoustic guitar; Chris Bauso, singer and guitarist; Jerry Bower, percussionist; and Eric Brown, singer and guitarist.
