Pantries benefit from library fines

Seymour Library in Auburn delivered 824 items to six local food pantries on Dec. 11 and 12.

The items were collected through the library’s Food for Fines program in November.

Patrons were encouraged to pay off library fines with non-perishable food items. Every item donated resulted in $1 waived off a fine.

The St. Alphonsus Food Pantry, the Salvation Army Food Pantry, the Community Caring Center, the Cayuga Seneca Community Action Agency, the Calvary Presbyterian Church Food Pantry and the SS. Peter and John Episcopal Church Soup Kitchen received items through the program.

Schweinfurth Art Center lists bequest

The Schweinfurth Memorial Art Center announced that it received a bequest of $352,000 from the late Ruth Edwards Carpenter of Aurelius. Carpenter died in September 2006 at the age of 94. She attended Willow Brook School and graduated from Auburn Academic High School in 1928, and she was a 1932 graduate of Syracuse University. She was a long- time member of the Art Center and supporter of the arts.

Funds will be used for capital improvements to the center including developing more program space and creating an entrance from the parking lot. Planning for the renovations is in preliminary stages.

The Schweinfurth Memorial Art Center is located at 205 Genesee St., Auburn.

CYO to hold holiday bottle and can drive

There will be a CYO holiday bottle and can drive from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. Saturday, Jan. 5, at the St. Alphonsus parish center parking lot on East Genesee Street in Auburn.

Auditions to be held for comedy show

The Auburn Players will be holding open auditions for Neil Simon’s autobiographical comedy “Laughter on the 23rd Floor” from 6 to 9 p.m. Jan. 6, 7, and 8, at Westminster Church, 17 William St., Auburn.

There are seven male and two female roles. The ages needed range from 20s to 50s. Cold readings will be held; no preparation is necessary.

“Laughter on the 23rd Floor” will run on the weekends from April 11 through 20, at the Irene A. Bisgrove Theater at Cayuga Community College.

Center to celebrate King’s Birthday

The Booker T. Washington Community Center will celebrate the birthday of Martin Luther King Jr. from 1 to 3 p.m. Saturday, Jan. 19, at the community center, 23 Chapman Ave., Auburn.

The center will serve lunch and host a special children’s presentation. Prizes will be awarded to the children for a coloring contest and “I have a Dream Speech.”
