CANTON - The father of a man killed in a deadly shootout with state troopers was given three years probation for leading deputies on a high speed chase last July.
Marvin Trim Jr., 45, of North Lawrence, pleaded guilty in October to second-degree reckless endangerment, a misdemeanor that carries a maximum penalty of up to one year in jail.
St. Lawrence County sheriff's deputies were attempting to pick up Trim on a mental health warrant in July when he drove off in his pickup truck. State police used spike strips to stop Trim, who allegedly tried to run down deputies.
As part of a plea deal, authorities dropped attempted assault, resisting arrest, unlawful fleeing from a police officer and possession of marijuana charges against Trim, who was sentenced.
Trim was the father of Travis Trim, who was the subject of a manhunt that led to his death and the death of a state trooper in Delaware County in a late April shootout.
Authorities began a manhunt after Travis Trim, 23, allegedly shot state trooper Matthew Gombosi in his bulletproof vest during a traffic stop, sped off, then abandoned a stolen minivan off a rural dead-end road near Margaretville, about 65 miles southwest of Albany.
Trim and state trooper David Brinkerhoff died in a shootout inside a farmhouse the next morning.
Also, the Delaware County district attorney closed his investigation into the April shootout, concluding that only Travis Trim committed any wrongdoing.
