I would like to share some good news for people with high deductible insurance policies or no insurance policy who need cancer testing. I would also like to commend two women who reach far beyond their daily jobs with compassion and care.
This year I had my first colonoscopy which was funded by the Cayuga County Healthy Men and Women Partnership. This group runs a cancer screening program in Auburn and funds breast and pelvic exams and mammograms for women 18 years and older and colonoscopies for men and women.
I avoided having a colonoscopy, even with colon cancer in the family, mainly because I had a high deductible health insurance policy and they are costly. I was sitting at home one afternoon when I got a call from a young woman who had just started working there. She asked me several questions about my family history, etc. and told me she would find out if I was eligible for full coverage for a colonoscopy. I didn't think I'd hear back from her for a few days later, she followed up by telling me I did qualify and then proceeded to connect me with Valerie White in her office.
Ms. White made many calls on my behalf finding me the right doctor, making appointments for me and arrangements at Auburn Memorial, following through on every detail. The entire process from the phone call to the procedure was painless and efficient. I have never had more attention from any medical service or group to ensure me such a smooth and comfortable experience.
Julie Delaney and White are now setting up a mammogram for me and introduced me to a terrific local doctor, Dr. Deborah Geer. Once again, they are bending over backwards to help me. Valerie even suggested accompanying me to radiologist as support, something she and Julie have done quite often.
These women and Cayuga County Healthy Men and Women Partnership are still a secret to some people but I think the good news should be spread. Please call them with your health concerns. They really are there to help and they will (253-1453).
Merry Christmas ladies and here's to a healthy new year for all!
