An Auburn teenager is facing multiple charges after police said he broke into a Chinese restaurant and stole change early Monday morning, an act that followed participating in an attempted robbery a few weeks earlier, according to the Auburn Police Department.
The 15-year-old has been charged by the Auburn Police Department with one count of third degree burglary, two counts of third degree criminal mischief and second degree harassment for allegedly committing a burglary early Monday morning, Auburn police said.
Officials are not releasing his name due to his age.
At about 1:05 a.m. Monday, officers were dispatched to China Wok Chinese Restaurant in Seminary Plaza, 19 Seminary St., Auburn, regarding a broken window, according to police. Officers soon realized someone had broken into the business and a tip jar with about $100 in change was taken.
Through a police canvass, officers learned that a male had entered Wegmans on Loop Road between midnight and 1 a.m. and cashed out a little more than $100 at the store's coin star machine. Officers obtained a description of the individual and provided it to unit patrols, according to police.
At about 3 a.m., a suspect fitting the description was observed walking on Seminary Street and was approached by officers. The suspect fled on foot to the Hess gas station at 70 North St. and locked himself in a bathroom and refused to exit, police said. While in the bathroom, the suspect caused over $250 in damage.
Officers were eventually able to remove the suspect from the bathroom, according to police. They identified him as a 15-year-old Auburn resident. During his arrest the teenager spit at an officer.
The male has also been charged with second degree attempted robbery and third degree criminal mischief for an unrelated robbery attempt on Nov. 15 outside the Days Inn, 37 William St., Auburn.
According to police, the suspect and two others threatened and demanded money from two pedestrians walking in the area. The victims in the area fled in a vehicle and as they did so, the male threw an object at the car, causing nearly $700 in damage. That incident had been under active investigation and sufficient evidence to charge him had been recently developed, police said.
The suspect was arraigned in Cayuga County Family Court and remanded to a secure juvenile facility.
